SAW-FILING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,445, dated March 14, 1893.
Application filed June 20, 1892- SerialNo. 437,328. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARVIN J. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new. and useful improvements in a saw filing device, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the device showing it applied as in use. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective View of the file holding frame. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the block.
A is a block having a groove B on its upper surface and a series of intersecting slots C having their crossing point at the bottom of the groove B, these slots being of suitable size to fit over the toothed edge of a saw and act as aguide therefor, and of such depth that the saw will project up into the groove a sufficient distance to enable me to file the teeth.
In order to file the teeth I employ a frame slidingly engaged with the block and carrying a file. This frame consists of a single piece of wire bent to form the two longitudinal bars D D, and the cross bar E having an eye F formed centrally in the cross bar by twisting the wire. The longitudinal bar D passes through a slot in the block while the longitudinal bar D bears against the edge of the groove. The two longitudinal bars are connected together at their lower ends by a cross bar or head G, the whole forming a rectangular frame slidingly engaging with the block adapted to be turned upon one of the bars as a pivot to and from the block.
H is a bearing centrally formed in the cross bar G and of suitable size to enable a file to be passed therethrough, and I a set screw entering said bearing adapted to bear against the file, or handle J, in which the end of the file is adapted to be secured, the upper end of the file being held firmly in position by engaging in the eye F at the upper end of the frame. The parts being thus constructed and the saw being engaged in one of the slots the operator taking hold of the frame moves it backward and forward having previously engaged the saw with one of the teeth he then moves the saw along and engages it with the next one, and so on to the end, insuring perfect evenness in filing, and also enables me to cut away the entire cutting surface of the file as it may be turned about for the different edges, and the frame maybe reciprocated the entire length of the file.
What I claim as my invention is- In a saw filing device, the combination with a gage block, of a sliding file holder pivotally secured therein at one side, and consisting of a single piece of wire bent to form parallel side bars and an outer cross bar having its central portion bentinto a vertically disposed loop, a cross bar at the opposite end of the frame uniting the inner ends of the side bars, and formed with a central eye, and-a fastener at the eye arranged to engage the file handle when adjusted, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARVIN J. PAGE.
