VINE-CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,322, dated March 14, 1893.

Be it known that I, JOHN H. WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macy, in the county of Brazos and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Vine-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to vine cutters, and has for its object to simplify the construction of devices of this character by means of an integral formation of the cutter, and with this object in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates the plow-beam, having handles 2, and a depending post or standard 3. To the lower portion of the post or standard 3 is secured the improved cutter 4t, which consists of a pair of cutting knives or shares 5, which are slightly divergent and are integrally connected by a front cross-piece 6, with a central opening 7 therein for the passage therethrough of the securing bolt. The lower edges of the cutting knives or shares are sharpened, as at 8, and the rear ends are curved upward, as at 9, through which the sharpened portion is continued,and said cutting knives or shares are given a slight concavo convex formation in the direction of their Width in order to provide for a more perfect-draw-cut. Adjacent to the opposite terminations of the cross-piece 6, the cutting knives or shares are formed with blunt lower edges l0 and are decreased in width, because at this point the formation of the cutting edge is unnecessary in view of the fact that it lies against the opposite sides of the post or standard.

In applying the improved cutting device to the post or standard ot' the plow-frame, the cross-piece 6 is placed over the front edge or side of the lower portion of said standard and a single securing-bolt 11 passed therethrough, this being the only means of securement necessary in view of the opposite inner opposing sides of the cuttingknives or shares bearing against the opposite edges of the said post or standard. This arrange ment prevents loose movement of the cutting attachmentin any direction and provides for ready engagement and disengagement of the said device with or from the post or standard.

A further important advantage gained by the construction set forth resides in the resiliency supplied to the cutting knives or shares through the medium of their integral connection with the cross-piece 6, and permitting them to have slight lateral movement to freely pass over obstructions, if the latter exist, without danger of breaking or straining the said cutting knives or shares.

It will be seen that the cutting knives or shares are so arranged as to simultaneously cut the vines on both sides of a row and save considerable labor and time by the double operation.

The device may be constructed of suitable metal of a proper grade of temper or degree of hardness, and after it has been usedin the manner stated a following plow can be employed to advantage in the furrows between the rows for covering the vines.

The construction set forth is comparatively inexpensive in manufacture, easily and readily applied, and forms a useful and convenient acquisition to agricultural implements.

Having described the invention, what I claim as new isl As an improved article of manufacture, a vine-cutting attachment adapted to be applied to a plow standard or foot consisting of a pair of cutting knives or shares integrally connected by a front cross-piece with a single central opening therein for the passage therethrough of a single securing bolt, the knives being rearwardly divergent and obliquely arranged at a downward angle, the lower edges of said knives or shares being sharpened and their rear ends curved upwardly, the said lower edges of the knives or shares adjacent to the said cross-piece being formed blunt, substantially as described.
