SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,828, dated March 7, 1893.
Application filed April 23, 1892.
' citizen of theUnited States of America, residing at Bloomington, in the county of Monroe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Fillers, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which The figure of the drawing is a side view of alamp bowl havingaportion broken away to more clearly show the filling tube located within. v
This invention relates to certain improvements in lamps and more particularly to the device for filling the lamp, and for indicating the height or quantity of oil within the lamp, which improvements are fully set forth and explained in the following specification and claim.
Referring to the drawing A represents the bowl of an ordinary lamp, and B represents the feed aperture consisting ofa tube extending from the breast of the bowl down for some little distance toward the bottorn,it being intended to have it extend to at least about half way down toward the bottom from the upper part or breast of the bowl. cipal new feature is that the inner walls of the tube B are polished so as to reflect like a mirror, so that when oil is poured in at this tube, the amount or height of the oil can be easily seen by reason of the reflection of the polished inner wall of the tube, and thus prevent an overflow of oil when filling the lamp.
If the tube B were not polished or bright on its inner side like a mirror there would be no reflection and the tube would not operate to indicate the height or quantityof oil in the lamp, and without great care an overflow would result in filling the lamp.
There should be a vent hole to permit air to escape when the lamp is being filled, but
generally enough will escape around the Wick for that purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
The combination of the lamp bowl A. and the combined filling and sight tube B having its interior surface polished so as to reflect the material within said tube substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
