Be it known that I, ELIZABETH S. LAUGH- LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabbage- Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved cabbage cutter, and consists in certain details of construction, and combination of parts as will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l, is a side sectional elevation of my improved cabbage cutter, which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end sectional elevation of the saine, showing the device for placing a pressure on the cabbage thrown, or revolved back to place the cabbage Within the holder.

To put myinvention into practice I provide a base board 1 havinga hinged portion 5,and cutting blade 2 after the manner common in the art of this class of cabbage cutters, and the said base board is provided with upwardly extending sides 3 in which grooves 4 are formed in the direction of the length of the said sides. Operating on the top of this cutter is a box 8, having projecting strips 4 which enter the grooves 3, and serve to confine the said box 8 in position, and at the same time permit a back and forward movement of the box along the cutte'r board. Attached to one side of this box 8, by means of a hinge 19, is a bent bar 12, which spans. the box and serves as a bearing for a central shaft 10, and a connected pressure block 7. This bearing 12 is made fast to the other side of the box 8, by

means of a notch 17, engaging with a springV ISO ure block 7, serves to hold the said block 7 y above the cutter, as shown at Fig. 2 on the drawings. Formed on the upper portion of the shaft 10, is a screw thread on which anut 13, is placed, which will prevent the block 7 from moving beyond a certain point, and the said shaft provided with a handle 14 by means of which the block 7 may be drawnrup and secured by the hook 15.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a cabbage cutter, the combination with the cutting-board 1, provided with the hinged portion 5, having the cutting blade 2, and the upwardly extending sides 3, provided with the i longitudinal grooves 4, in the inner opposing faces thereof, of the sliding-box 8, having the bearing 19, the bent bar 12, hinged to the bearing 19, the pressure block 7, the central shaft 10, seated in the bent-bar 12, and encircled bya spiral spring between the pressure block and the bent bar, the stop-nut 130m athreaded portion of the shaft` 10, between the handle portion 14, and the bent bar 12, and the hook-rod 15 connecting the pressure-block 7, with the bent bar 12, substantially as specified.
