SASH PASTENER. No. 491,882. Patented Feb. 14, 1893.

GEROLT GIBSON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SASH-FASTEN ER.,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,882, dated February 14,1893.
Application filed .Tune 3, 1892. Serial No. 435,416. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern* Be it known that I, GEROLT GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved sash lock, more particularly for the upper sashes and it has for its object to effect the automatic locking of the sashes against accidental downward displacement, from any jarring motion or the action of the wind from housebreakers, or other cause and yet providel for effecting in a simple and expeditious manner, the manipulation of the lock in lowering-the sash, and to these ends my invention, consists in the novel combination of parts substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side view of a window frame with its upper and lower sashes, parts being broken away, embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views of my sash-lock, the latch or dog being shown reversed and Figs. 4 and 5 are detailed plan views of the same and Fig. 6 is a modification of the invention.
In the embodiment of my invention I produce it in three castings or pieces, the bracket A, the latch or dog` B and the catch C. The bracket A consists of the verticalbase adapted to be secured by screws or otherwise to the parting bead or letinto the same, and of the face plate ce integral with said base and iush with its front edge and obscures from view the greater portion of the latch. -The latch or dog B is hung or pivoted, a short distance below its upper end, so as'to stand vertically with its tooth normally resting against the basea, its pivot b passing through it and iixed inthe face-plate et and a lug a2 on the base a of the bracket A. The latch or dog B has kan'outstanding or outwardly deected upper end b', to permit the convenient manipulation thereof, by the pressure thereupon of the linger toward the base ct of the bracket A, when the upper sash is to be lowered. The lower end of the latch or dog B, though beveled both inward and outward as at b2, need not, necessarily, be beveled, only inward, and has an upwardly facing broad dat shoulder as at b3 near said end and notched or recessed in its forward edge just above said shoulder to cause said shoulder to standinward instead of being in the form of an oifset, to reduce the latch to a minimum width. The catch O, preferably a rectangular plate c, adapted to be secured by screws, or otherwise, to the upper sash, has projecting from-the upper left hand corner of its said plate a lug c beveled upon its upper surface inward or toward the latch, and having a broad flat lower surface for engagement with the corresponding upper surface of the shoulder b3 of the latch B to form therewith a solid interlocking action, while the beveled meeting surfaces of the latch and catch, permit-the ready interlocking of said parts. The plate c has at its lower or bottom edge a horizontal ledge or extension c2 to close the notch or recess cut in the top rail of the lower sash for the passage, in the movement of the upper and lower sashes, of the catch with its lug.
In the modification, as disclosed in Fig. 5, the parts are reversed, a helping or enabling spring d also being employed, such a spring also being used in the preferred form of the lock, as shown in the other figures, if desired, to assist gravity.
The operation of my lock is apparent, as it will be seen that, assuming the upper sash to be lowered, by pushing upward on said sash, the latch and catch will interlock and said sash be forced j amb tight upward and be thus held against accidental downward displacement or being otherwise jarred downward, as for instance by the action of the wind or other forces.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a sash lock, the combination of the bracket having the face plate at the front edge In testimony whereof I affix my signature in of its vertical base, and a, lug, the dog or latch presence of two Witnesses.
hun0f near its upper end, between said faoef 1 plat an d lug and having a lower beveled end GEROL E GIBSON' and en outwardly defieeted upper end, and Vitnesses: the entoh having at its upper left hand corner PRESTON GIBSON, a beveled stud, substantially es set forth. HENRY W. BOND.
