SIDESADDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,831, dated February 14, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, BENJAMIN PAUL BLOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Sidesaddles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, such as will enable others skilled in the same line of invention to make and use the same.

My invention relates, generally, to sidesaddles for horseback riding by ladies and, particularly, to improvementsin that class thereof in which metallic or other rigid hangers are employed for supporting the stirrups and providing against the disadvantages incident to the upward and outward movements of the left legs of the riders, and in which leap-horns are provided for preventing undue upward movement of the left knees of the riders; and my invention consists in the peculiarities of construction and arrangement of the parts and features hereinafter fully disclosedin the description, claims and drawing.

The objects of my invention are, first, to provide any ordinary orsuitable side-saddle, having the usual horn for supporting the thigh of the right leg of the rider and, if desired, a leap-horn for resisting the upward movement of the left knee of the rider, with a'laterally and rearwardly projecting and scroll-shaped or curved brace for preventing any upward or outward movement of the right leg below the knee and for assisting in securing a more agreeable and safe seat for the rider than usual; second, to provide a novel and improved form of construction of stirrup-hanger and its belongings for securing proper leverage for the left leg of the rider and preventing undue or disadvantageous rise and descent of the left cot, and,

third, to provideother novel and improveddevices or features which will be accessorial to the attainment of these ends or results. These objects are accomplished by the improved construction and arrangement of the parts and features illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which the same reference numerals are used for indicating the same parts and features, and in which Figure 1 represents a side, partly-perspective View of a side-saddle provided with my improvements and, Fig. 2, a smaller, similar View thereof, showing the position assumed by a lady when riding thereon.

I In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 indicates a side-saddle of any ordinary or suitable construction, which is provided with the main-horn 2 and, also, with the leap-horn 3, which is employed for preventing undue rider. These horns are upholstered or padded in any suitable or desired manner.

To the upper front part of the left skirt of the saddle and below and in front of the main-horn 2, the laterally and rearwardly projecting and scroll-shaped or curved brace 4 is secured by flanges'and rivets or other suitable means. This brace is made of sheetmetal, of suitable width, and is employed for furnishing upward and outward resistance to the movement of the right leg of the rider below the knee. The left skirt of the saddle which supports this brace may be stayed or strengthened on its inner surface by a metallic lining, in case the leather of said skirt is not of proper thickness or strength; also, the inner or rear surface of this brace may be either padded, in any suitable manner, or formed into a plain, sheet-metal scroll having outwardly-rounded edges and made to conform to the lower portion of the leg, but not to incase the same so closely as to inerfere with its ready or easy disengagement in case of desire or necessity. The construction and arrangement of this brace not only adapt it to resist any straightening tendency or action of the right leg, when in riding position, but prevent lateral movement thereof and, also, the swaying of the person or body of the rider to the right, whereby all disagreeable or fatiguing pressure is avoided and the rider is seated as firmly as if she were riding astride of the animal; also that further advantages are incident to this appliance or brace will appear from the fact that it not only secures a firm and safe seat for the rider, but that it lightens and lessens the jolt of her person upon the seat of the saddle, especially when assisted by the leverage caused by the passage of the right leg around upward movement of the left knee of thethe main-horn 2, and permits and prompts her to assume an erect and graceful carriage when riding.

The foregoing advantages or results are largely contributed to by providing the same kind of hearing or leverage for the left leg of the rider, which is effected by the peculiarities of construction and arrangement of the parts and features of the hanger 5 and the stirrup b, the former being rigid and preferably made of spring-steel is pierced and pivoted at its upper end and bifurcated at its lower end, its prongs or branches 7 constituting the limbs or sides of the stirrup, proper, and, in connection with the cross-bolt or pivot 8, which passes through the lower ends thereof, forming a firm or strong support for the slipper 9 of said stirrup and, also, allowing it a limited rocking motion.

The rear edge of the hanger 5 is provided with the outwardly and forwardly curved support or socket 10, which is fitted or adapted for receiving and supporting the upper portion of the calf of the left leg of the rider and so arranged upon said hanger that the straigh tening of the leg will simultaneously cause it to bear against said curved support or socket and force the frontportion of the foot forwardly and into the slipper 9 of the stirrup, thus producing a bearing or leverage which will contribute to the prevention of all uncomfortable or. fatiguing pressure upon the seat of the saddle and resist all upward and downward movement of the foot of the rider. The hanger and its curved support or socket may be painted the color of or covered with leather, and said socket may be lightly padded, if desired.

Having thus fully described the construction and arrangement of the parts and features of myinvention, its advantages and operation, what I claim as new isl. A side-saddle for horseback riding provided with a main-horn and, also, with a laterally and rcarwardly projecting and curved brace, which is secured at a point in front of said main-horn and to the upper front part of the left skirt of said saddle for furnishing upward and outward resistance to the movement of the right leg of the rider below the knee, substantially as described.

2. A side-saddle for horseback riding provided with a main-horn, with a leap-horn, for preventing undue upward movement of the left knee of the rider and, also, with a laterally and rearwardly projecting and curved brace, which is secured at a point in front of said main and leap horns and to the upper front part of the left skirt of said saddle for furnishing upward and outward resistance to the movement of the right leg of the riderbelow the knee, substantially as described.

3. A side-saddle for horseback riding provided with a rigid stirrup-hanger having an outwardly and forwardly curved support or socket projecting from its rearedge for receiving and supporting the upper portion of the calf of the left leg of the rider, substan tially as described.

4. A sidesaddle for horseback riding provided with a rigid stirrup-hanger having a bifurcated lower end forming part of the stirr u p and slipper,which are pivoted thereto, and with an outwardly and forwardlycurved support or socket projecting from its rear edge for receiving and supporting the upper por tion of the calf of theleft leg of the rider, substantially as described.

5. A sidesaddle for horseback riding provided with a main-horn, with a leap-horn, for preventing undue upward movement of the left knee of the rider-,wit-h a laterally and rearwardly projecting and curved brace,which is secured to the upper front part of the left skirt of said saddle for furnishing upward and outward resistance to the movement of the right leg of the rider below the knee, and with a rigid stirrup-hanger having an outwardly and forwardly curved support or socket projecting from its rear edge for receiving and supporting the upper portion of the calf of the left leg of the rider, substantially as described.
