SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,649, dated February 14, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OTTO HOFMANN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Lissa, in Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Money Banks or Gases, of which the following is a specification.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive money bank or case which is especially adapted for the use of housekeepers and others inexperienced in the management of iinances, and which affords convenient means for accomplishing the following results; first, for apportioning a monthly allowance of money in such manner that a determined portion thereof is saved and a uniform daily expenditure of the remainder thereof is insured; second, for facilitating the segregation of the amounts not expended from the daily allowance and for encouraging the saving of the same for future use or investment; and third, for indicating at a glance how much of the monthly allowance has been expended and how much remainsfor use during the ensuing portions of the month.

My invention stated in general terms, consists of a money bank or case comprising a base or panel provided upon its face with a cavity for the reception of gold coin, and with coin holding pockets or compartments,where of some appertain to the respective days of the month and others are adapted to retain change and small savings.

My invention further consists of the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.

The nature, scope and characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof; and in which Figure 1, is a top or plan view of a money bank or case embodying features of my invention; and Fig. 2,is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

In the drawings j, is a base-plate or panel having its edges off set downward as shown at j in Fig. 2, for a purpose to be presently fully described.

g, is a cavity cut or otherwise formed in the base-plate or panel j, and adapted for the reception of gold coin equal in value to the pre- -determined amount that must be saved in each month, as well as for other gold coin.

.72 and jg, are transversely andlongitudinally ranging strips that intersect each other and form a grid secured to the face of the panel j'. This grid together with base-plate or panel j', constitutes a series of compartments or pockets for retaining coins. In the present instance thirty-nine separate compartments or pockets are shown.

The comparatively shallow compartments or pockets designated upon the drawings by the numerals 2 to 3l inclusive, appertain to the corresponding days of the month and are adapted especially for the reception of the daily expenditures. The comparatively deep compartments or pockets a, b, c, d, e, f and z, are adapted for the reception of change. The large and deep compartmentorpocket t', serves for the reception of any small or incidental savings that may accrue from the daily allowance.

In use the allowance for the month, which will be assumed to amount to forty dollars, is distributed in the bank or case in the following mannerz-One dollar is placed in each of the compartments or pockets designated by the numerals 2 to 31 inclusive, a live dollar gold piece is placed in the cavity g, and small coin or change to the amount of five dollars is distributed in the pockets a, b, c, d, e, fand 7i. Each day a dollar is removed from the corresponding pocket or compartment and is used in defraying the household expenses for that day, however, if the expenses of the day do not amount to a dollar, the difference is deposited in the pocket or compartment fi, and the accumulations in the latter, or small savings, may be exchanged for gold coin and deposited in the cavity g, and thus added to the regular monthly savings and preserved for investment or urgent need. Of course, the amount of money remaining on hand at any given time and available for use duringr the remaining portion of the month may be rendily ascertained by reference to the Compartments or pockets designated bythe numerals 2 to 31 inclusive.

Having thus described the nature and objects of the invention, what I claim as newV and desire to secu re by Letters Patent is:-

In a money oase, abase or panel having its Io ends depressed below the body portion and provided with n series of longitudinal and transverse dividing strips whereby a series of shallow compartments are formed upon the main portion and a series of deeper Compartments at the ends, substantially as described.
