Description

J. T. GUTHRIE.
WE'IGH-SCALES. V No. 173.168. Patented Feb. a, 187e.
INVENTLHX N. PETERS, PNOTO-UTHOGRAPHR. WASHINGTON. D. C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. i.
JAMES T. GUTHRIE, OF LEESBURG, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN wElcaH-scALEs.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 73,168, dated February 8, 1876; application filed January 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. GUTHRIE, of Leesburg, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Scales; and I do hereby declare the .following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to Which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of' this specilication.
My invention relates to an improved scalebeam calculator; and it consists in securing, alongside of the beam, a receiver having an open face on its inner side, into which are slipped plates that have the price ot' articles at so much per pound stamped upon both of their sides, so that the price can be read ofty at a glance, as soon as the Weight is found, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents an ordinary platform-scale, to which is` bolted, just back ot' the beam c, the receiver d, into which the dat plates e are slipped. This receiver is open at its outer end, and has an opening along its inner face, so that the numbers on the plates e can be seen. The edges of the opening in the receiver, and the plates, are all marked oi' vinto spaces, so as to correspond to the notches in the top edge of the beam. Formed on the loop that slides along the bea-m, and which supports the Weight g, is the linger or index fi, that is made long enough to reach over near to the face of the plate e, so as to point directly to the proper number, and thus prevent any uncertainty. To the rear side of the receiver is secured a small spring, h, to the inner side of which is fastened a small stud, that passes through into the receiver, and catches into a hole in the outer end of each plate, and thus prevents it from being moved and getting displaced.
When this calculator is to be used with the ordinary counter-scales, the receiver will be held up to the beam by means ot' a foot-piece or support, that will be bolted to the foot ot' the beam. Each plate is numbered on each side, the numbers on the side marked with an O being for just the number of pounds marked on the beam. Should these numbers not run high enough another weight is added at j, the plate drawn out of the receiver, turned over, and then reinserted. On the second side are numbers giving the price in dollars or cents up to just twice the number of pounds marked on the beam. Each of these plates will be calculated at a certain price, and will give in cents and fractions of a cent the cost ot' any number of pounds, or will calculate from ounces up to many pounds, as the case may be.
Having thus described myV invention, I claiml. In combination With a platform or counter scales, a receiver and removable calculating-plates, substantially as shown.
2. The combination ot'lthe beam, receiver,
removable calculating-plates', and index-nger i, substantially as described.
8. The combination ofthe receiver, removable calculating-plates, and a spring-catch, to hold the plates in position, substantially as specied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this/1th day ot' January, 1876.
JAMES T. GUTHRIE.
