DAVID N. IVEATHERS, OF LEAVENlVORTH, INDIANA.
VEGETABLE=CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,622, dated February 14, 1893.
Application filed June 20, 1892. Serial No. 437,243. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID N. WEATHERs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Crawford and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in vegetable cutting and slicing machines.
The objects of this invention are first, to employ a suitable box or receptacle provided with a follower and mechanism for actuating the same, to exert a constant and even pressure on the substance contained therein; secondly to employ in combination with a box provided with a self feeding device, a number of rotary knives or cutters independently adjustable whereby the depth or thickness of the out may be readily and conveniently regulated; thirdly, to provide a suitable gearing for imparting a high rate of speed to the cutters and finally in so constructing and arranging the parts so as to produce a strong and durable machine, comparatively inexpensive of manufacture.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in various novel details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1, is a plan view of one form of machine embodying my improvements, Fig. 2, is a central longitudinal View of the same, Fig. 3, is a detail view. Fig. 4 is a face view of the rotary cutters. Fig. 5 is a perspective View in detail showing a means for adjusting the cutters.
In the drawings A and G indicate the box or receptacle, supported 011 the standards or legs P, the sides a, a, of the box are formed with slots a a), for the reception of studs 0, o of the follower C, and serve as guides or ways, see, Figs. 1. and 2. These studs 0, 0, project some distance beyond the sides of the box and have attached thereto, the ends of springs D, D, which are supported in boxes secured on the sides a, a, as at d. Thus it will be readily understood that any substance contained in the receptacle A, will be constantly and evenly fed toward the cutters; furthermore, that the tension .of these springs may be made adjustable by the addition of a screw threaded rod d as shown in Fig. 1. On a shaft E, suitably mounted in bearings c, e, a disk 6 is keyed and from the center face thereof extend radial arms 6 e The extreme ends of these arms are secured to a circular band a to which the outer slotted ends of the cutter blades a are ad justably secured by means of thumb screws e, as is clearly shown in Fig. 5. These cutters are also provided near their inner ends with slotted lugs e and thumb screws 6 whereby a very fine adjustment may be obtained to regulate the depth of cut, as will be obvious.
Secured on the outer end of the shaft E, is a gear wheel F, which meshes with a second gear G, keyed on shaft g. This shaft g, also has keyed on its outer projecting end a crank wheel H, provided with a detachable handle It, to admit of the machine being driven either by hand or other power. To the rear of the follower, a cord I, is attached and passes through a slot in the rear wall of the box A, to the drum 2', secured on a shaft i mounted in suitable bearings as at 4?, i On one end of this shaft 2' a crank and handle is provided whereby the follower may be drawn to the rear of the box and the substance in serted. The operation of the machine will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
Having fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
1. In a vegetable cutter, the combination with a spring actuated follower of means for adjusting the tension of said actuated springs, the winding drum and cable, the radially arranged and independently adjustable cutters and suitable gearing for imparting a rotary motion to the same, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a vegetable cutter, the combination with the casing A, having slots a formed able gearing for imparting a rotary motion to therein of the follower provided with latersaid cutters. IO ally projecting lugs c, c, entering said slots In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the Winding drum and cable, the springs D, presence of two Witnesses.
5 secured to said lugs, the tensionary screws (Z, DAVID N. WVEATHERS.
the shaft E, carrying a cutter frame 0 e, the Vitnesses: radially arranged cutters c having slotted E. P. LEAVENWORTH,
prejections c and thumb screws e and suit- J. H. VEATHERS.
