SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,819, dated January 31, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARCUS M. BEEMAN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bindings, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to bindings made from goods cut on a bias; and my invention consists in a binding consisting of strips of cloth stitched together at their meeting ends, and having one of the butt ends, exterior to the stitching, made shorter than the other butt, and the long butt of the one strip secured over the short butt of the other strip and onto the back of the other strip.
It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which I illustrate the mode of making it from the goods in the piece, and in which,

Fig. 3, is a like view of the same showing the long butt partially folded down, or lapped over the short butt onto the back of the other rhomboid or strip, and a strip of cement between it and said back. Fig. 4., is a like view of the same, showing the long butt folded down and secured over the short butt and onto the back of the adjacent rhomboid or strip. Fig. 5, is a top plan of the back after two (or more) rhomboids are stitched together and the long butts cemented down, and straightened out as in Fig. 2, and showing a strip of binding partially cut off on a line parallel with the sides of the rhomboids so secured together.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, I first cut the goods. on an angle of forty-five degrees to the selvages, at such distances apart as to create equal sided rhomboids a and thereby cutting the warp and weft threads upon that line of bias. I do not limit myself, however, to any precise angle of bias cut. I can also out the material on a bias, and then cut the bias cut pieces into strips a'- of such width as may be desired before securing the ends together.
As the joint is made between two rhomboids, and two strips, in the same manner, I will only describe the making thereof between two rhomboids. I place two of them, one upon the other, face to face, and stitch their meeting ends together creating butts, exterior to the stitching, of equal or substantially equal length, in their projection beyond the stitching, and trim one of the butts oif short, or close to the stitching, thus creating a long butt c and a short one c'. I then straighten out the rhomboids, as shown in I Fig. 2, and fold the long butt over the short it to the back of the other rhomboid as in Fig.
l, after which I cut the rhomboids, by parallel lines, into strips as shown in Fig. 5. It will thus be seen that the joint is made by stitching and by securing the long butt of one strip, across and over the stitching, onto the back of the other strip, so that the stitching in the joint is re-inforced by the over-lapping goods.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
A binding consisting of strips of material, having their meeting ends stitched together and having one of the butts reduced in its projection, exterior to the stitching, and having the long butt of one strip folded over the short butt of the adjoining strip, and secured by cement over said butt and onto the back of the adjoining strip, substantially, as and for the purposes set forth.
