UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AARON H. BUGHEE, OE CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARE-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,079, dated August 1, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARON H. BUGHER, ot' Cincinnati, Hamilton count-y, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Checking Device for the Prevention of Fraud in the Collection of Fares, Tolls, or other Payments 5 and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tO the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invent-ion relates to a system of checks operatedjointly by the collector and the person paying the fare, toll fee, or other money, whereby a precise register or record beyond the control of the collector is preserved of each and every payment.
Figure l is a perspective view of a box or case embodying the principal features of my invention.
A is a' box or case having a lid, B, whose lock'is in the exclusive custody of the superintendent, cashier, proprietor, or Whosoever may for the time bein g have control, charge, or ownership of the money.
D is a slot or aperture in the top of the box A, through which check or counters bearing on their faces the amounts paid in each case are dropped by the passenger or other person paying the money. Vhen checks of several denominations are employed, as many separate compartments and appropriate apertures may be provided in the box.
The box may have a concavity or depression, E, on its rear side to lit the arm of the user, and maybe provided with straps F F', which, being linked or otherwise attached to the upper rear angle of the box, may pass through staples GVG near the lower rear angle and engage by eyes H over studs or buttons I proiecting from the bottom of the box.
The strapsF F' may be of india-rubber and the eyes H of metal, while the buttons may consist of a series, so as to enable the wearer to give the straps any desired tension.
An additional safeguard may be afforded by providinga sh utteror escntcheon, J, to the keyhole, which escutcheon, when closed,passes under a curb, L, coincident with Whose center the said escutcheon is provided with a` flaring stud orbutton, M. rlhe key-hole being closed by the escutcheon, a wax seal may be run and stamped into the space Within the curb, and will be securely held in place by the button H. A still further safeguard may consistin fixing ath wart the aperture D, on its under side, a yielding and resilient tongue, N, which, being momentarily defected by the passage into the box of a counter, will return with a spring and strike a bell, O, so as to enable the collector as Well as the payer, and even any by stander, to know whether a counter has actually entered the box.
The box may be composed of tin, \vood,'
gutta peroha, leather, or other suitable material, and may be adapted for use with coin or other money instead of counters.
