Ferma/WIB Hfce UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEOPHILUS ANTHONY BROUWER, JR., OF EAST HAMPTON, NEW YORK.
POCKET STAMP-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Ifetters Patent No. 490,783, dated January 31, 1893.
Application filed August 23, 1892- Serial No. 443,932. (No model.)
To ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEOPHILUS ANTHONY BROUWER, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at East Hampton, in the county of Suffolk and btate of New York, have invented a new and useful Pocket Stamp-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pocket stamp holders or stamp safety cases, and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a casein which postage stam ps can be carried without becoming sticky or otherwise affected by moisture orheat, and second, to afford an easy and convenient means of taking stamps from said case. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated A in the accompanying drawings of which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stamp holder as it appears ready for receiving the stamps; Fig. 2, is a vertical section of the. same taken on line X Y of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the respective ends of holder. Simi1arletters,refer tosimilar parts throughout the several views. y
The metallic case or framework of the holder A, contains a ribbon or coil B, of metal or silk or other suitable material, which can be wound and unwound respectively on the shafts E and F by a spiral movement as shown in Fig. 2.
The shafts E and F. pass through the case and are revolved by means of cogwheels C and G. mounted on the outside of the same. The cog wheel G. is fitted with a thumb nut or by the turning of handle D which cog wheel G causes cog wheel C to revolve. The shafts E and F on which the ribbon or coil is wound are split as shown in Fig. 2 so as to receive the ends of the ribbon or coil, which consists of tin foil, silk or any tough and pliable material or metal to which a sticky surface will not easily adhere. The surface of the ribbon or coil is smooth and highly polished and is slightly oiled to present a non adhesive surface. The shafts E and F pass through thelower side of the holder framework A as shown in Fig. 4 and are made somewhat larger atv their ends outside the case. The front of the case A may be covered by a lid.
To lill the holder with postage stamps turn the thumb nut or handle D away from you until the roll on shafts E is almost unrolled, then place the postage stamps at the place shown in Fig. 2 Where the ribbon or foil is wound from shafts E on to shafts F and turn the thumb nut or handle D toward you until the stamps disappear within the coil. To take the stamps out turn the thumb nut or handle D in the opposite direction.
I am aware that prior to my invention receptacles for postage stamps have been made and I do. not broadly claim the same but.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
1. In a pocketstampholder the combination of the case A, with spacing and holding shafts E and F, cog-wheels C and G, ribbon or coil B and Vthumb-nut or handle D, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
2. In a pocket stamp holder a ribbon or coil B attached to and adapted to Wind and unwind on shafts E and F, and the cog-wheels C and G spaced and held by case A in combination with thumbnut orhandle D, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
3. In apocket stampholder the combination of shafts E and F split to receive the ends of ribbon or coil B, with the ribbon or coil B and with cog-wheels C and G and with thumbnut or handle D, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
