'DRAFT SPRING POR VBHH'LIF'S.V No. 490,527. I 'PajtevntedlJa-n. 1893.
Fries.
ATENT JOSEPH s. wIN, or MossY cnnnmvmemm.
DRAFT-SPRING FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,527, dated January 24, 1893.
Application filedMay Z4, 1892.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. WINE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mossy Creek, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Spring Attachments, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to spring draft attachments, particularly adapted to be used on plows, harrows, sleds, wagons &c. The object of the invention being to employ a suitable device, whereby the jolt or shock occasioned by the sudden starting of a vehicle shall be entirely overcome or absorbed. by said device. A further object being to so construct this device whereby it may be readily and conveniently applied to any vehicle without necessarily altering the latter.
Finally the invention contemplates the provision of a draft spring device that shall be strong and durable to effectually withstand the strains shocksv dac. incident to the operation of the same, said device being simple in construction and one that may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in a spring draft attachment for vehicles, comprising a suitable casing having mounted therein a bolt, the latter being encircled by a spiral spring and so arranged, whereby, as power is applied to the evener, the force exerted will tend to compress the spring, and thus relieve the vehicle from jarring or shocks incident to the travel of same; furthermore, the invention resides in certain novel details of construction whereby the several objects are attained.
In the accompanying drawings forming a Serial No. 434,225. (No model.)
part of this specification, wherein like letters A2, of the shafts, and being pivotally secured. 5o
Referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen, that after the evener B, is inserted at b, the spiral spring C, is placed in position and the bolt D, is passed through the coinciding apertures of the several parts to bind them in their relative position.
It will be understood that various changes may be made in the detail construction of this invention without materially departing from the general idea involved.
From the foregoing description, the operation of my invention will be at once understood.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
In a draft spring attachment, the combination with the bar A, bent up to form a clip having the arm a2, as described, of the pivotal bolt a3, securing said clip centrally of the whiftletree, the bolt D, supporting the whiffletree and the spiral spring encircling said bolt to exert a pressure on said whifiietree, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH S. WINE.
Witnesses:
