SASH-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,768, dated January 10, 1893.

Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. SWEENY, of Jackson Centre, in the county of Shelby and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sashes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in window sashes.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a vertical section. Fig. 2, is a front view.

In the drawings a, indicates the upper sash, and 17, indicates the lower sash. These sashes slide in suitable ways or guides c, in the window frame.

d, indicates the cord at one end secured rigidly to the upper portion of the upper sash a, and from thence extending upwardly over the pulley e, and down to the lower sash to which it is detaohably secured. f, indicates the bifurcated frame or support in which the pulley e, is mounted. This frame is secured by screws or nails; one of said securing screws g, also forming the axle of the wheel e. The frames are secured atthe upper ends of the guide ways in which one sash travels, and each frame is provided at its upper end with a lateral extension g, in which the wheel 6, is mounted so that its axle is located directly above the strip 9 separating the two sashes. Each frame is also provided with a lateral shoulder e, resting on the upper end of the strip g and thereby forming a mate rial support and increasing the strength and durability of the parts.

h, indicates an L shaped casting provided with screw holes and formed to fit the upper edge of the lower sash and extend down the outer side thereof. A pair of ears or lugs i, is cast integral with the lower arm of said L shaped casting, base or plate, and the cam lever j, is pivoted betwen said lugs 2'. The cord d, passes down between said ears and under said lever and overastationary shoulder 70 so that the rib can be secured to the lower sash or released therefrom. By this means the two sashes can be relatively adjusted and held in any desired position. The upper portion of the L shaped plate which rests on the upper edge of the lower sash is provided with the horizontal tubular portion Z, slotted at the top in which the locking bolt slides. This bolt is moved by a knob 02, passing through the slot in tube Z. Several recesses 0, can be formed in the inner face of the upper sash to receive the end of said locking bolt m. By this means the two sashes can be locked together in any desired position. The L shaped plate or base It, is suitably secured to the lower sash by means of screws or other devices.

Suitable means can be provided to lock the lower sash down to the frame. Such means are indicated by reference letter 19.

The curtain fixtures are carried by the upper sash and moved up and down with the same. As the fixtures on opposite sides of the upper sash are the same, the fixtures on one side only will be described, as the fixtures are interchangeable. A fixture consists of a standard q, provided with a lateral base secured to the upper portion of the upper sash and extending outwardly and horizontally therefrom and provided with an outward tubular portion q. The rod or extension 1", is held in this tubular portion q, and clamped in the desired position by means of the set screw g This rod or extension r, has a straight portion r, fitting in the tubular portion q and can be adjusted longitudinally therein so as to throw the outer portion of the extension toward or from the sash. The rod at the outer end of the straight portion 4", is bent upwardly and forms the upwardly 5 extending portion T and the end of the rod is bent laterally and horizontally from the upper end of the vertical portion 'r and forms a horizontal portion 4", extending parallel with the face of the sash and toward the fixture at the opposite end of the sash so that the brackets s, on the horizontal portion r can be adjusted toward or from each other for short or long curtain rollers. The bracket 8, at its outer end is formed as shown to receive the spindle of the curtain roller, and at its inner end is formed with a hub or sleeve fitting the portion r of the extension and provided with a clamping screw 8' so that the bracket can be adjusted and clamped in the desired position. By means of this construction of curtain fixture, the curtain is held up above the upper sash when the sash is in position so as to appear as if screwed to the window frame. The curtain and fixtures move up and down with the upper sash, as is evident, so that air can freely pass in and out through the upper part of the window.

The device herein described is very simple, cheap and durable and possesses many advantages over the devices of this kind heretofore made.

The adjustment of the peculiar curtain fixture described is exceedingly varied, and

can be adapted to many kinds and sizes of window or curtain rollers.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:-

The combination of the frame, the sashes, pulleys, L shaped castings secured to the upper end of one sash and having the ears on their lower portions, clamping levers mounted between said ears, the upper portion of each casting formed tubular and containing a locking bolt, and the cords secured to one sash and passing over said pulleys and clamped betweeen said locking levers and casting of the other sash, as described.
