IMPROVEMENT FOR CLEANING TUBES IN BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,94 S, dated July 25, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit-,known thatI, J osEPH J ILLINGWORTH, ot' Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of NewYork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cleaning Tubes and Flues of Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying d rawing, forming part of this specification.
The drawing, consisting only of one ligure, represents an elevation of a vertical longitudinal section of a steam-boiler with my apparatus applied to one of its tubes. f
This invention consists in a device, hereinafter described, for cleaning thetlues and tubes of steam-boilers by means of a jet or current of steam directed through said tubes and ues.

The tubes of steam-boilers are apt to become foul with soot, ashes, and cinders from the furn nace, the blast which enlivens the fire sometimes carrying cinders and smallffragments of coal out ot' the fire into the tubes. The collection of ashes and cinders continues to accumulate until some of the tubes are nearly or quite closed,and all of them more or less obstructed and the draft of the furnace in a manner destroyed. It is not necessary to withdraw the fire or let it die out in order to use the hose in the tubes orin the tire-chamber; but if itis desired to clean the tubes or the walls of the fire-chamber while the fire is kept up, it can be done with good effect and without injury to the hose from the heat ofthe fire by applying the hose immediately after fresh fuel has been applied I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent- The nozzle E b and flexible pipe D, applied substantially as herein described, for cleaning iiues or tubes of steam-boilers.
