As the'arm N moves downward the rear rounded side-of the lug S engages the rounded endof the hook and pushes the upper end of the lever slightly to the left until. it clears the hook and the latter then catches over it. a It will be seen that there is a slight space between the upper surface of the. lug S and' the hook on the lever R, so that the arm N can move upward a very short distance before the lug S comes in contact with the hook. This is to permit the operating handle to be moved forward far enough to effect the release of the indicator in the manner before explained; but it will beseen that-it is impossible to'movethe handle beyond this-point and that the hooked lever positively looks it and-the arm N until the indicator is completely returned to initial po-' 'sition' and the rack arm A lowered far enough for its pin '1" to move the hooked levcroutof the path of the lug S. In this manner,owing to the fact that the hook of the lever stands directly in the path of the lug at the end of each indicating operation the forward movement of the operating handle ijseyond the releasing point is absolutely prevented until the indicatorand connected parts arereturn'ed to initial position.
For-the purpose of preventing too violent return of the indicator to initial position undcr the impulse of the spring'B' I connect the rack arm/A to a lever U which has connected to itthe piston-rod V or a piston which fits within a cylinder Wclosed at both -ends and approximately filled with a liquid,
preferably'oil. The piston is either perforated or does not fit the cylinder snugly, so
that it can move up and down therein slowly,
the oil escaping from in front of it as it moves, \Vhcn the operating handle and indicatorare turnedforward and the rack arm A lifted the piston is lifted in the cylinder 'W. and the oil passes below it; When the indicator is released and the spring .13 pulls the arm A downward, to reset the parts, the connection of the arnrwith the piston in the cylinder *will prevent the spring acting too quickly and Jar-ring or breaking any of the parts.
The registering mechanism of the machine is substantially the same as that shown and described in my prior patent aforesaid. There is looselyniounted upon the sleeve 'l immediately in front of the ratchet F, Fig.2, a gear wheel X which meshes with agear wheel upon theprimary whcel'Y of a train of registering wheels, and a pawl Z pivoted to the ratchet l and springpressed into engagement with the gear X causes the ratchet to turn the gear wheel and primary registering zwheelrwith it during its torwagd movement from zero to indicating, position, but permit them to remain at the point to which they have been moved while the ratchet wheel and indicator return to initial'positi'on. In this manner the amount of each indication is added uponthe train of registering wheels,
the wheel Y adding its revolutions upon a secondary wheel A", the latter upon a, third wheel I)" and a latter upon a fourth Wheel C in the usual manner. A pawl arm D engaging the gear of the primary registering wheel X prevents'any back'wardmovement'ofi the registeringwheols. l. i r
The sliding money'drawer D-is provided at its rear end. with'a locking-plate E. with which co-operates a vertically-guided locking bolt 7 A F arranged. to be lifted out of engagement with the locking plateE ateach'operation of the machine, whereupon ithedrawer 'will be thrown open'by' the action of a'ceilcdspring;

The arm N has pivoted to it at O a. plate 0 which has a shoulder-P adapted to co-operate with a lifterarm Q 'fast on the shaft EL When the shaftis turned in the direction of .the'arro'w. the arm Q -engages the lower abrupt side ofithe shoulder P of the plate 0 and lifts the arm N and link M? and rocks the shat J'- and releases the drawer. During the return movement of the shaft -E the arm Q ridesover'the rounded upper surface of the shoulderPtaud forces the plate 0 aside as -itrpasses;whereupon the plate-is moved to the. right again by the action of a suitable spring, not shown; In this man ncr at the beginning'of each forward will be released and-automatically thrown open. v
For the purpose of preventing operation of movement of the operating handle the drawer the machine except when the cash drawer is '15 will hold the. parts in such position that the hooked end of the arm R is slightly above the path of travel of the arm U on the shaft E, but when the drawer is released and thrown open the bolt F isfrce to move farther downward and a spring V? connected to the arm N pulls the latter and connected parts down ward until a stop NV? on the link M Figs; 5 w

this downward movement of. the arm N will. lower the hooked end of" the arm R into thepath ofthe arm U on the-shaft E, sothat the latter cannot be turned forward until the drawer isclosed and'locked again and the "hooked end ofthearm R lifted above the arm U The stop W is vertically adj ustable upon consistingof a slotted plate bent loosening the screwand lowering the plate until its lower end rests upon the bottom of the casing, and then tightening up the screw, the-link'M and the locking arm R will be permanently held in their upper position, so
that the machine can be operated at all times,
whether-the drawer be open or closed. A

"at-and 5, and having pivoted to its lower end a trip-B whose left hand end in Fig. 5 is widenedand-rests in the cornerformed by the junctionof the .two upper arms 'of the plate G and also projects laterally into the 1 path of the arm U on the shaft E, -When said'shaft is turned forward in the direction of the arrow the arm U will carry the trip B and lower end of the lever Z to the right in Fig.5, (to the left in Fig 1,) untilthe end of. the arm U clears the trip, whereupon a spring C connected at its right hand end to the trip and at its left hand end to one of tinarms of the plate G will throw the parts back to normal position and cause the striker "f to sound the gong.
, Having thus fully described my inventi I claim:
1. In a machine such as described, the combination of a numbered dial, an oscillatory shaft, an operating handle secured thereto, an indicator and a ratchet movable together on'thc shaft, a pawl engaging the ratchet for holding the indicator at any point-to which when the latter reaches such it is moved, a connection between the ratchet and shaft by which the latter-turns the ratchet and indicator in a forward direction and moves independently-of them in the reversedirection, means for disengaging the pawl from the ratchet at the beginning of the'forward movement of the operating handle and shaft, a detent for holding the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet- .until the latter has.
the shaft, the notched arm J, the detent K" cooperat-ing therewith, the pawl arm G loosely connected to the arm J and co-operating with the ratchet, and a connection between the arm .7 and the ratchet and shaft forward movement of the shaft and inthe opposite direction at the 'returnof the ratche to initial position, substantially as described.

5. In a machine such as described,.the cornbination of the rack-arm Ngeared to thei op erating'shaft, the rack arm A gearedto the indicator, the resetting springs for s'aid arms and the hooked locking arm R cooperating with projections on the arms N and A, re spectively, for the purpose of locking the arm N from movement except when held out of locking position by the projection on the arm A, substantially as described.
6. In a machineguch as described, the combination of the rack arm N gearedto the op eratingshaft and provided with the lug S, the rack arm A geared. to the indicator and provided with the pin T, and the hooked arm R normally tending to move over the lug S on the arm N'and held from such movementby the pin T on the arm'A' when the latter is in its initial. position, wherebythe arm N. and operating shaft are lockedf'from movement except when the arm Aflgi and indicator are in initial position;
7. In a machine-such asdescrihied, the combination of the rack arm A geared to theindicaton, the resetting spring B "connected to said arm, and the lever-U pivoted at one end .to the casing and connected at its other to the arm A intermediately and to the piston rod 'Vofthe piston within the cylinder \V, substantially as and for the purposedescribed.
