SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,952, dated December 27, 1892.

.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SoonATEs SOHOLFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Driving the Bobbins in Roving- Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the combination with the bobbin gear, and its bobbin driving means, of an annular coupling, which forms the outer wall of a chamber for holding an absorbent material for the lubricating oil.
Figure 1, represents an elevation of the bobbin-gear, and the skew-bevel gear by means of which it is driven. Fig. 2, represents an axial section of a bobbin-gear constructed according to my improvement. Fig. 3, is an axial section showing a modification. Fig. 4, represents an axial section of the bobbin-driving collar made in two parts.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the driving shaft, B the skew-bevelgear upon the driving shaft, and C the bolster. The bobbin gear 00, Fig. 2, loosely fits the bolster G to revolve thereon and is provided with an annular extension or hub h, having an exterior screw thread 1), adapted to receive the corresponding interior screw thread 0, of the coupling cl; and t0 the upperend of the coup ling d, is attached the collar e,provided with the clutch pinf, adapted to engage with the driving notch in the head of a bobbin, which is to be placed upon the bolster above the collar 6, the said collar being attached to the coupling (1, by means of the engaging screw threads 0, of the coupling, and b, of the collar.
A modification of my invention is shown in Fig. 3,in which the attaching screw thread 0, is out upon the exterior, instead of the interior of the coupling d, the corresponding change being made in the location of the screw thread I), of the gear a; and the collar 6 is shown as attached to the couplingd, by a driving fit at the joint g. The collare may be sometimes made in two parts as shown in Fig. 4, in whichj represents a short tube the bore of which loosely fits the bolster C, so as to revolve thereon; and to the tube j is suitably secured the ring 7t, provided with the engaging clutch pin f.
Between the surface of the bolster O, and
the annular wall formed by the bore of the coupling 6, is an annular chamber or space 77., which may be filled with wicking or other absorbent material 11 adapted to hold the oil for lubrication.
The advantages of my improved construction consists, in greater facility of manufacture by special machinery, in provision for improved lubrication, and for the renewal of the running fit upon the bolster, whenever a worn-out gear is removed from its coupling attachment with the bobbin driving collar.
A friction coupling may be used instead of the screw-threaded coupling shown in Fig. 2, to removably connect the gear a, and the bobbin driving collar e, as with a driving fit: and when the coupling d is made with a friction surface at one end, and a screw thread at the other, I prefer to attach the bobbin driving collar to the friction end of the coupling, as shown in Fig. 3, thus making the gear itself conveniently detachable by means of the screw-thread; and when a screw-threaded coupling is employed to connect the gear a and collar 6, the thread of the coupling should be made, either right,or left hand, as the case may be, so that when the bobbin gear is placed in revolution, the tendency of the engaging screw threads will be to tighten the joint; a left hand screw-thread being properly employed when the gears a and B, are arranged as in Fig. 1.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a bobbin-gear, of the bobbin-driving collar, and an annular coupling which forms the outer wall of a lubricating chamber, and detachably connects said gear and collar, substantially as de scribed.
2. The combination with abobbin-gear having an annular hub provided with an exterior screw-thread, of the bobbin-driving collar,
and an annular coupling, which forms the outer wall of the lubricating chamber, detachably connects said gear and collar, and is provided with an internal screw-thread, which engages with the screw-thread upon the hub of the gear, substantially as described.
