CLARK S. MUDGE, OF BETTSVILLE, OHIO.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,828, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed September 1'7, 1892. Serial No. 446,203. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK S. MUDGE, of Bettsville, in the county of Seneca and State of .Ohio, have invented anew and Improved Musical Instrument, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved musical instrument which is simple and durable in construction,,and arranged to readily and conveniently produce musical tones in any desired key, being well adapted for use in place of fifes, piccolos, and other similar musical instruments.
The invention consists of a thin, flexible disk supported on a handle, and a plate held adj ustably on one face of the disk.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a face View of the improvement; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a face View of the disk; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the adjustable plate.
The improved musical instrument is provided with a disk A, made very thin and preferably of celluloid or other flexible material. The disk A is held on a stud B secured in a plate 0 extending on one face of the disk A and its sides extending beyond the periphery of the disk, as is illustrated in Fig. 1. The plate 0 is provided at its lower end with an angular offset C, connected with or formed integral with a handle D of suitable construction.
On the face of the disk A, opposite the plate 0, is held an adjustable plate E, having an elongated slot E loosely engaging the stud B,
so that the said plate E can be readily moved up or down on this face of the disk A, the plate being approximately the same in shape as the plate 0.
On the lower end of the plate E is formed an extension E arranged above the offset 0 and rigidly connected with a rod F, extending through the said offset C, as is plainly shown in Fig. 2. On the lower, threaded end of this rod F is held a large nut F, adapted to be engaged by the thumb of the operators hand to push the plate E upward on the face of the disk A. A spring G is coiled on the rod F and presses with one end on the nut F, and with its other end on the under side of the offset 0, so that when the operator releases the pressure on the nut F the spring G forces the rod F and the plate E down- Ward.
The device is used as follows: Musical tones are produced by forcing the breath or air over the circular disk A in such a manner as to cause it to vibrate. High and low tones or notes are made by compressing the air more for a high tone and less for a lower tone. The plate E, on account of being arranged to move upward by pressure from the thumb and downward by the force of the spring G, aids in producing high or low tones by shifting it up on the face of the disk A for a high tone, and down for alow tone. The disk A is held on the stud B by nuts B engaging the threaded end of the stud. The disk A is mounted to be turned on the said stud when the nuts B are loosened, so that whenever the disk becomes doubled up at the part played upon, it can be turned and another side or place can be brought to the top to be used for producing the tones, as above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent;-
1. A musical instrument comprising athin,
flexible disk, and a plate held adj ustably on one face of the disk, substantially as shown and described.
2. A musical instrument comprising aflexible disk, a handle for supporting the said disk, and a plate held adj ustably on one face of the disk, substantially as shown and described.
3. A musical instrument comprising a handled plate carrying a stud, a flexible disk supported on the said stud, and a plate fitted to plate and provided with a nut, and a. spring pressing on the said rod, substantially as 10 shown and described.
CLARK S. MUDGE.
