PROCESS OF EMBALMING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,338, dated December 20, 1892. Application filed May 19,1892. Serial No. 138,593. (No specimens.)
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TAYLOR MARTIN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Fairmont, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Method of Embalming and Compound Therefor, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to embalming; and it has for its object to improve the process usually employed, and to effectually disinfect and preserve the corpse.
With this general object in view the invention consists in a certain novel process hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of apparatus employed in carrying out my process. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both the figures of the drawings.
In practicing my process I may employ an apparatus constructed as follows:
Referring to the accompanying drawings; A represents a suitably constructed rectangular combustion box, provided with a suitable door a, by means of which access may be gained to the interior thereof and with the side discharge openings a, in which is inserted the tube of an ordinary bulb syringe B. Resting upon the bottom of the combustion box A, is a fire block 0,111 which is placed a mixture composed of the following disinfectants, to wit; sulphur, charcoal, myrrh, salt, and salicylic acid, which when ignited upon said fire block will give off a disinfecting gas which may be drawn from the closed box A, and in- .jected by means of the syringe B, into the cavity in the body made for its reception, so as to thoroughly impregnate the body with this gas and serve the function of a powerful disinfectant. In order to provide for the combustion of the compounds just described within said closed box, a mixture of black oxide of manganese and chlorate of potash is fed to the burning mixture from the hopper D, arranged in the top of the box directly over the fire block and from which the oxygen supplying mixture is forced by the feeding shaft d The gas is injected into the corpse, and subsequently is passed through a suitable body of strong lime water so as to kill the germs therein and render the same pure, thereby still subserving its disinfectant property. In said purified lime water is placed the following named ingredients, to wit, potassium chlorate pulverized alum, saltpeter, potassium carbonate tincture of myrrh, and salt. When the 'abovenamed ingredients are thoroughly solutionized in the lime Water, a powerful preserving or embalming fluid is completed which subserves all the functions of ordinary fluids, while at the same time providing for more certain and lasting effects. This same fluid, as the next step in the method, is injected into the same punctures or openings made in the body for the reception of the disinfectant gas, after which injection of the embalming fluid, the embalming is completed.
Any suitable proportions may be employed for combining the ingredients of the disinfecting and embalming compositions respectively, but the most desirable proportions may be stated to be as follows:
Disinfectant compound :Sulphur,one-half pound; charcoal, thirty grains; myrrh, thirty grains; salt, two ounces; salicylic acid, thirty grains.
Embalming fluid :Ohlorate of potash, one dram; alum, one-half dram; saltpeter one ounce; carbonate of potash, one dram; tincture of myrrh, one half ounce; salt, three ounces; lime water, one gallon.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
1. The method of embalming, which consists, first, in injecting into the corpse intermingled, disinfectant gases subsequently passing said gases through apurifyingliquld, and finally, injecting into the corpse the said purifying liquid impregnated with the same gases and an embalming compound, substantially as specified.
2. The method of embalming, which consists, first, in injecting into the corpse intermingled disinfectant gases, second, passing ing, which consists, first, in injecting into the corpse intermingled disinfectant gases, second, purifying the same, and third, combining the gases with an embaiming fluid and in- 5 jecting the Whole into the body, substantially as specified.
