CARPET-STRETGHER?.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4S, S29, deted July 18, 1865.

-To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, G. G. MUDGE, of Pittsburg, in the county ot' Carroll and lState of Iiidiana, have made new and useful Improvements iuCerpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be e full, clear, and ex extensible, so that it' may reach from wall to wall across the intervening space.

Extending from the end et' the frame A is a. bifurcated block, H,'bet'ween whose prongs is pivoted an arm, I, whose cross-head J is provided with a row of teeth, K. The arm is Asecured. at any required part ot' its sweep by the engagement cfa piu with the teeth of the' `rack L.

The portion B, when projected. to the extent required, is secured at that vpoint by the set- `screws E,which pass through the yoke D and impinge upon B, :md in lihe manner the setscrew G, 'passing th rough the yoke F, impinges upon C to muinteinthe lutter et the required extension. The method of operation is as follows: The carpet being' tacked at the foot of the wall on one side of the room, the endC is placed against that wall and the machine extended by drewing out the sections B C, so thatthe teeth on A the cross-heed J may, when thelatter is projected by the depression ot' the arm I, push the un fastened edge ot' the' carpet tothe foot of the wall, where it is to b e tacked. This having been done, the pin on the lever I becomes engaged with the rack L und the carpet is re- 'tained in position until it is tacked down.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim therein-as new, 'and desire to secure by The frame consisting ofextensble hin ged sections, and provided at one end with an armed rocking leier, by which the edge of the carpet is drawn to the positionrequired.
