TERRET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,249, dated December 20, 1892. Application filed December 15, 1890. Renewed August 26, 1892. Serial No. 444,152. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMEs 0. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Terrets or Hame -Rings for Guiding Horses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to harness terrets or hame-rings for guiding the reins of the harness and which may be attached to the hame, saddle or other suitable or convenient part of the harness.

My invention has for its object to so construct a terret that the reins shall be guided thereby so as to occupy at all times a substantially horizontal position and counteract all tendency to twisting the same and to keep the rein buckle outward and away from the body of the horse and prevent its becoming caught or entangled in any part of the harness or the usual fly-nets covering the horse.

For this purpose my invention consists in a terret which may be'of the usual or any suitable form, provided with a narrow rectan gular guiding slot approximately of the contour and size of the cross section of the rein and formed by two guiding rollers, one of which is provided with circular flanges embracing the other and which rollers are preferably situated at the bottom of the loop or opening of the terret or hame ring. And my invention consists moreover in a terret provided with such guiding rollers one or both of which may be made removablefrom the terret and retained by a spring-latch at the side of the terret-ring and bearing against the end of the spindle or spindles of the roller or rollers. And my invention finally consists in such further details, combinations of parts and features as will be hereinafter pointed out and covered in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings:--Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of a terret embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a front elevation of a portion of a hame with the said terret applied thereto; Figs. 3 and 4. side elevations of modified forms of terrets embodying the said invention, Fig. 4 being shown partly in section.

Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be noted that the terret shown therein consists of the usual ring A provided with the ordinary screw-threaded shank, a, for screwing the same into the hame. A rectangular slot through which the rein, shown in cross-section at 0, passes is preferably formed by the two guiding rollers, D and E, the upper roller E, of which is preferably provided with the guiding flanges or disks, e, e, which embrace the lower roller D at its ends in such a way that no space is left for the reins to slip out of the slot B or become caught. The inner faces of the disks, e, e, are preferably beveled as shown, in order to prevent any direct friction against them when the draft on the lines is inclined to one or the other side. I preferably make one or both of the guide rollers removable. This may be done in various Ways, butI consider the one shown as the most desirable and efiective. The rollers D and E it will be observed are mounted on the spindles, d and 6, respectively which spindles are removable and preferably provided at their outer ends with squared heads, (1 e fitting into corresponding counte'rsinks in the side of ring A. When in position they are held in place by the spring latch or keeper, F, pivoted at, f, in the side of the ring and of sufficient extent to cover both the heads 6?, and 6 In order to prevent this spring or keeper from being caught in the harness or otherwise deranged the same fits into a recess, a in the side of the ring, so as to be flush with the same.

The manner of operating and using this terret is obvious from the foregoing. When the reins are in place between the rollers they are always kept in a substantially horizontal position and prevented from twisting. The buckle is consequently always kept outward and prevented from becoming caught in the fly-net, or other portion of the harness. At the same timethe movement of the reins is permitted and facilitated by the anti-friction rollers D and E. The object of placing the said rollers in the lower portion of the ring is to aiford ample space in the ring above the same to do up the lines when unhitching.

In Fig. 3 I show a somewhat modified form of aterretinvolving my invention, which differs from the foregoing in the following particulars. In the place of the screw shank I have here provided the same with a depending and hooked lug, G, extending downward at one side of the terret'so that the same will occupy a substantially upright position when attached to theinclined sides of a hame. The mode of attaching the same is preferably by staples, g, g, riveted or otherwise secured to the hame, g, and engaging at their tops the lug, G, and the lower portion of the terret, as shown.

Still another form of terret is shown in Fig. 4. There the means for securing the same to the hame consists in a slot, [*I. The terret is in this instance secured to the hame by a strap secured thereto and passing through the slot H. In this modification I have shown only one of the rollers removable, viz: the roller, D.

It is manifest that the devices shown to illustrate my invention may be modified in many particulars without departing from my invention. I do not therefore desire to be limited to the exact details shown and described, but

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

' 1. In a terret the combination with a terretring and a guiding-roller of a removable spindle upon which the guiding-roller turns and a spring-latch at the side of the terret-ring for keeping the said spindle in position, substantially as described.

2. A terret provided with a guiding-slot for the reins and a depending lug extending downward at one side of the terret, whereby the terret may be attached in an upright position to the hame, substantially as set forth.
