Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID L. PETTEGREW, OF GLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO I SYLVESTER DAVIS AND JACOB SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
' IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,774. dated July 11, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID L. PETTEGREW, of Glaremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to construct a fence that can be easily adjusted to the inequalities of the ground, and at the same time be more light and portable than any which has heretofore been known or used. To this end I first construct a beam and place it upon the ground at right angles with thefence to be built, and if the ground be uneven,or it upon the side of a hill, I secure it in a proper position by digging away the earth, or by propping it up with stones or earth, according to the circumstances of the case. This beam is shown on the drawings by the letter A. I next attach two upright posts to the said beam for the purpose of holding the fence-rails. They are separated from each other by a brace, 0, near their tops, and by the key D near their bottoms, and are held, together by the said key, and also by a bolt that passes through them and the said brace, and is fastened on one side by a staple and pin, as represented at E. The posts are marked B on the drawings. These posts B bolt, and of sufficient depth to receive the same. The post is placed upon this bolt, and is further secured in its place by means of the brace U, which extends from near the top of the posts to a point near the end of the beam, where it is fastened thereto by means of a bolt or screw or other suitable device. 7
The brace G is made adjustable to the inequalities of the ground by a series of holes near its upper end, through which the bolt may pass that holds the posts together. It is not necessary to always adjust the beam in a horizontal position and at right angles with the posts, as these holes through the brace C will enable me' to give the posts a perpendicular position, even when the beam occupies an inclined plane or angle.
The key 1) is a short piece of wood notched on both sides in the center, so as to clasp the sides of the two posts and hold the one not fastened by the bolt from moving sidewise.
Double posts for a portable fence are preferable to single ones, for the reason that they may be made much smaller, and therefore are more easily removable; and, furthermore, by this means 1 am enabled to construct a fence that may be removed and readjusted without removing the boards or rails with which it is made. I
I claim The double posts B, with the key D, and the adjustable brace (J, combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
DAVID L. PETTEGREW.
