ROLLER-BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,699, dated December 6, 1892.
Application mea June 30,1892. serai No. 438.527. (no model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern.- revoluble parts that are arranged therein, as
Be it known that I, JOHN GIBBONS, of West hereinafter explained. Troy, in the county of Albany and State of y Bdesignatesadetachable cap which formsa New York, have invented new and useful Imclosure for the outer end of the journal-box A, 55 provements in Roller-Bearings, of which the to which said cap is secured by means of bolts following is a specification. 7. A cylindrical rim 8 is formed on the in- My invention relates to roller-bearings for ner face of said cap for the purpose of bearjournals of shafts and axles, but especially ing on the outer end of the cylindrical lining for journals of axles used for railway-cars; 5, so as to retain the latter in place. The in- 6o 1o and the object of my invention is to provide ner diameter of said rim is greater than the a roller-bearing that willbe efcient in operabore of the lining 5, so as to give a suitable tion and will be practically frictionless. I clearance for parts of the roller-bearing thereattain this object by. the mechanism illusin. The inner face of the cap B has a circutrated in the accompanying drawings, which, lar groove 9 formed therein to correspond to 65 being herein referred to, form part of this the groove 4, and it is made for a like purspecification. pose as the last-named groove. A chamber In said drawings, Figure l is an end eleval0 is also formed in the inner face of said cap, tion of a journal-box containing my rollersaid chamber being circular in form and havbearing, with the axle shown in vertical secing a concave seat ll formed at. its circnm- 7o zo tion and the closure for said journal-box beference.
ing removed to expose said roller-bearing. O designates my roller-bearing, which, as Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of said journalshown in Fig. 2, has two series of rollers D'of box, showing a plan view of my roller-bearing like form and provided with a long spindle l2 and a portion of the axle. Fig. 3 is atransat one end and a shorter spindle l3 at the op- 75 verse section of the journal-box, roller-bearposite end. The spindles l2 of one series are ing, and axle at the line X X on Fig. 2. Fig. arranged to come between the adjacent roll- 4 is a transverse section of the journal-box ers D of the other series, so that each end of at the line Y Y on Fig. 2, the axle and rollerthe roller bearing the long spindles l2 and bearing being removed therefrom to showinthe short spindles 13 will alternate with each 8o 3o ternal parts of said journal-box. Fig. 5 is a other, the ends'of both sets of spindles at the perspective view of one of the rollers of the same end of the roller-bearing being fitted to roller-bearing shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is move on the same plane. All of the spindles a plan view of a modified form of my rollerat one end of the roller-bearingmove in withbearing. 4' .out touching the groove and all the spindles 85 As represented in the drawings, A desigat the opposite end move in a like manner in nates the journal-box for a car-axle for railthe groove 9, and said grooves will retain all ways as adapted to receive my roller-bearing. of said rollers in their allotted places when- Said journal-box is provided with a cylinever the journal-boxA and its contained rolldrical chamber l, having an inturned annuer-bearing is removed as an entirety from a 9o 4o lar flange 2 at its inner end and an external journal to which it is assigned, and thereby circumferential flange 3 at the outer end of the operation -of restoring said journal-box said journal-box. The annular flange 2 is and roller-bearing to place will be greatly faprovided with a circular groove 4 in its inner cilitated. face, said groove being formed concentrically Each end of the rollers D is provided with 9 with the bore of said chamber, for a purpose a circular projection l4-for the purpose ofprehereinafter explained. The chamber l is venting said rollers from bearing upon each preferably provided with a cylindrical lining other at the conjoining ends and against the 5, which is concentric thereto, and by which adjacent faces of the annular links by which an enlarged circumferentialgroove6isformed Vthe rollers are retained in position. In the roo 5o at the inner end of said chamber for the purmodification shown in Fig. 6 the roller-bear- 5 pose of giving suitable clearance for certain ing C c consists of two series of rollers of different forms. One ot said series is composed of two rollers 15, having a spindle IG, which projects an equal distance from the outerend of said rollers, and a clear space is left between the adjacent ends of said rollers to receive the roller of the otherseries. The other series of rollers is composed of single rollers 17, adapted to ente the space between the adjacent ends of the rollers l5. Each roller 17 is provided with a spindle 18, which projects to an equal distance from each end of said roller. The length of the spindles 16 and 1S is the same, so that the ends of said spindles will be in the same plane.
E designates the annular links for retaining the several rollersin their required positions. The external diameter of said links is less than that ofthe rollers of the roller-bearing of either form shown, thereby relieving said links from any pressure against the journal or journalbox, the bore of said link being justsuflicient to engage over the projecting ends of two adjacent spindles. Two series of said links are used at each end of the roller-bearing, and they are so arranged that a ring of one series will bear on one side of one spindle and extend in one direction to engage with another spindle and a ring of the other series will bear against the opposite side of the spindle first named in this paragraph and, extendingin a direction opposite to that ot the ring just. referred to,`engaging with another spindle. In this manner every spindle will have a different ring bearing against its opposite sides, and the series of rollers will be bound together, so as to be irrelnovable by accident from their assigned places.
F-designates a car-axle journal ot' the ordinary form with a concave seat 19, which, by coacting with the similar seat ll of the cap B,
forms a suitable annular holder for a ball or balls 2O to produce an antifriction thrustbearing for taking an endwise pressure on said car-axle.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a roller-bearing, the combination of two series of rollers of like form arranged in reversed positions and each having a spindle extending from its opposite ends, the length 2. In a roller-bearing, the combination of` two series of rollers so arranged that the rollers ot' one series will have a rotative movement independently of the other series and each roller being provided with a spindle whose ends move on the same planes with the correspending ends of the other spindles, and two series of annularlinks at each end of said spindles so arranged that each spindle will be engaged by different links at its opposite sides, as and for the purpose herein specified.
3. In a roller-bearing, the combination of two series of rollers having a spindle projecting from the opposite ends of each roller and two series of annularlinks whose outer diameter is less than .the diameter of said rollers, the latter being so arranged thatthe inner ends of the rollers ot one series will overlap the adjacent ends of the rollers of the other series, the spindles of each series of said rollers being arranged intermediately the bear in g-su rfaces of two adjacent rollers of the other series and said links being arranged so that each spindle will be engaged by dierentlinks at its opposite sides, substantially as specified.
4. In a roller-bearing, the combination of a casing provided with an annular groove in its inner end, a cap for said box, having in its inner face an annular groove which corresponds to the groove of said box, two series of rollers provided with spindles which project from opposite ends of each roller, and two series of annular links which are arranged so that two dilerent links will engage the opposite sides of each spindle, whereby the several rollers will be retained in their proper positions and the ends of spindles will be caused to travel in said annular grooves, substantiall y as herein specified.
