STEAM-BOILER INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,684, dated December 6, 1892. Application filed July 26, 1892. Serial No. 441,2552. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE LAWRENCE MODERMOTT, of Neenah, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boiler Indicators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement-in steam-boiler indicators; and it consists in the novel features of construction which will be fully described hereinafter, and more especially referred to in the claims.
The object of my invention is to construct an improved electrical indicator or alarm which may be readily attached to the Water gage of an ordinary boiler without in any Wise tampering with the boiler proper, thus eliminating all danger of accident while applying the improved device.
A further object of my invention is to so construct the contact-plates on the verticallymoving rods that they will adjust themselves to both contact-points even though the rod itself is not in a perfectly-vertical position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a steam-boiler Water-tube, showing my improved indicator attached thereto, a portion of the latter also being in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached view of the vertically-movable float, contact-plates, and connecting-rod.
A represents the water-tube of ordinary construction, B the connection between its lower end and the boiler, and C the valved connection between its top end and the boiler. The upper side of the outer end of this lastthreaded depression, which communicates with the glass A by the vertical passage G. Adapted to be inserted in this socket is the vertically-recessed head D, having an enlarged interiorly screw-threaded opening E at its upper end. The upper end of the passage G ares outward, as shown, where it communicates with the opening E. Extending diagonally upward through these flared sides are the contact-points F.
G represents a cylinder which is adapted 'to screw into the opening E, and secured to the upper end of this cylinder is the cap G, thus forming a tight closure of the cylinder. Depending through this cap are the contactpoints H and connected thereto are the respective ends of the circuit-wire I. The wire ends at these points are also connected with the depending wires J, which are secured at their lower ends to the contact-points F.
A float K is adapted to move in the glass A, its position therein being regulated by the height of the Water in said glass. Extending upward from this fioat is the rod L, which projects into the cylinder G. 'llo the upper end of this rod is secured the disk of non-conducting material M, and immediately above and below this disk are secured the contact-plates N. The latter are fastened to the rod L in such a manner that they are allowed a slight Wabbling movement, so that when the float rises to the top of the glass A the said upper contact-plate will be moved vertically against the lower ends of the upper contact-points H, thus closing the circuit in the wire I and sounding a bell-alarm at any desired point within hearing of the engineer. The plate being allowed this wabbling movement, an upward pressure is sure to bringit in contact with both points H whether the rod L is vertical within the cylinder or not. In like manner when the water in the boiler becomes very 10W the float descending draws the lower plate N in contact with the points F', which also closes the circuit and sounds the alarm.
The cap G and the head D are hexagon in form, so that a wrench may be conveniently applied thereto forturning the same. Rubber packing is placed within the said head and cap, against which the ends of the cylinder bear, thus making a very tight joint, which effect-ually prevents leakage.
The indicator mechanism above described is entirely removed from the boiler proper and may be readily attached to water-gages of oro dinary construction without in any wise tamper-in g with the boiler. Thus a most effectual I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a steam-boiler Water tube, a cylinder supported above and in com- 5 munication with said tube, contact-points at the upper and lower ends of the cylinder, a float in the tube, a rod projecting therefrom into the cylinder, and contact-plates loosely secured to the upper end of the rod, substanro tially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a water-tube of a stea1n-boiler, a cylinder supported above and inI communication with said tube, contact-
