|UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL A. OLIVER, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
SUBSTRUCTU RE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,582, dated December 6, 1892.
Application iiled March 18, 1892.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Beit known that I, SAMUEL A. OLIvER, of Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved substructure, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in substructures such as are adapted to form supports for any kind of a su perstructu re, and especially to that variety of substructuressuch asbridge-piers-which are exposed to the action of water.
The objectI of my invention is to produce a simple and comparatively-inexpensive substructure of this kind which may be conveniently erected, which will have the necessary strength, which is provided with ample protection against the action of wat-er, and which is constructed in such away that the protective part of it may be easily renewed when necessary.
To this end my invention consists in a substructure the construct-ion of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a view of a pair of piers constructed in accordance withmy invention and arranged to support a truss, one pier being shown in side elevation and the other in vertical section; and Fig. 2 is a broken plan view of one of the piers and the brace secured thereto.
The main pier 10 is of tubular form and is made up of a series of sections bolted or riveted firmly together, the interior of the pier being filled with concrete to give it lthe necessary rigidity. Wherethepiersare arranged l Serial No. 425,441. (No model.)
in pairs, as shown, they are connected by braces 1l, crossing diagonally and extending from pier to pier, and cross-braces 12, the cross-braces 1l and 12 being secured to lugs, which are fastened to the piers. The piers have suitable caps 13, so that the truss 14 may rest securely upon them. The lower portions' of the piers-that is, the parts which enter the water-are covered or inclosed by a caisson 15 ot' larger diameter, which incloses the main pier, and the intervening space between the caisson and the body of the pier is filled with concrete, the top of the caisson being preferably covered by an inclined plate, (shown at 16,) so that it will resist the action of the weather. The caisson 15 is preferably made up in sections bolted together, and it will be seen that it will thoroughly brace the main pier and will prevent the latter from being acted on in any way by the water. The braces connecting the piers may be arranged as shown, or any suitable braces may be used, and the braces may be connected with the main pier at the top and with the caisson at the bottom, but. are preferably run through the caisson and connected with the main pier, as shown in `the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the main structure, of an inclosing caisson for the lower portieri of the same, a filling between the caisson and the main structure, and an inclined protecting-plate for the top of the caisson, substantially as described.
SAMUEL A. OLIVER.
