SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,576, dated December 6, 1892.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, LUCAS M. KUEHN, of Wabasha, in the county of Wabasha and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Elevator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved elevator which is simple and durable in construction and is more especially designed for use on large ice-boxes and other receptacles for conveniently elevating and depositing blocks of ice or other articles in the receptacles.
The invention consists of a frame adapted to be raised and lowered and provided with a platform mounted to swing on the frame and adapted to be automatically tripped to move into an inclined position, so as to automatically vdeliver the elevated article into the ldesired place. Y
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.l
Figure l is an end elevation of the improvementwith parts in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the platform in an inclined position; and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the platform-frame and guide-post, thelatter being shown in section.
The improved elevator is mounted on a post A, erected in the immediate neighborhood of the ice-box or other receptacle on which the elevator is to be used. On this post A is mounted to slide vertically a frame B, provided with a front plate B, from the sides of which extend the arms B2, supporting at their outer ends a friction-roller B2, engaging the back of the post A, while the arms B2 engage the sides thereof and the plate B the front of the post, so that the frame travels easily up and down the post. The front plate B is,in addition, provided with anges B4, f1tting on the sides of the post A. (See dotted 5o lines in Fig. 4.) From the plate B extends a pin C, engaging a bearing D', formed on the under side of a platform D, mounted to turn on the said pin, so as to swing from ahorizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, into an inclined position. (IlIuStratedinFigS.) Thisplatform D is provided with a front side D2 and arear side D3, connected with each other at one end by a back D4, while the other end is formed by a gate or chute E, hinged to the front end of the platform, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. On the rear side D3 is formed a segmental slot D5, concentric with the pin C, and this slot is engaged by a screw or bolt F, held in the post A. The slot D5, with the screw or bolt F, limits the swinging or tilting motion of the platform D. At the rear side D2, next to the chute E, is formed a lug G, adapted to be engaged by a fixed arm H, projecting from the receptacle, into which the article is to be delivered, or from a separate bracket, as the case may require. The lugs G and H constitutea tripping device for the platform D, so that the latter is moved automatically into an inclined position, as hereinafter more fully described.
The upper end of the plate Bof the frame B is connected with a rope I, extending upward and passing over a pulley J, journaled in a recess in the upper end of the post A. The rope I then extends downward and winds on the hoisting-drum K, the shaft K of which is journaled in a bracket A', attached to the rear side of the post A. On the shaft K is secured a gear-wheel L, in mesh with a pinion M, mounted to rotate loosely on a shaft O, secured in the bracket A above the shaft K. On this shaft O is fulcrumed loosely a lever P, carrying a spring-pressed paWl Q, engaginga ratchet-wheel R, secured on the front face of the pinion M. The outer end of the pawl Q is in close proximity to the handle of the lever P, so that the pawl can be conveniently disengaged from the ratchet-wheel R, for the purpose hereinafter more fully described. The lever P can be locked in place when the platform is lraised by means of a chain S, attached at one end to the bracket A and formed at its other end with a ring adapted to be hooked over the handle of the lever P.
The operation is as follows: When the platform D and the frame B are in a lower- IOO most position at the bottom of the post A,
then the block of ice or other articleA can bev conveniently placed on the platform, the latter then extending horizontally. When the block of ice has been deposited, the chute E is swung upward against the block of ice, (see Fig, 2,) and then t-he operator takes hold of the lever P and turns the same, so that the pawl Q, in engagement with the` ratchetwheel R, turns the latter on the fixed shaft O, and as the said ratchet is attached to the pinion M the latter rotates with it and imparts a rotary mot-ion to the gear-wheel L, secured on the shaft K', carrying the drum K. The latter is thus rotated and winds up the rope Lwhereby the frame B, the platform D, and thelarticle supported thereon ,are elevated,
y .the .frame B traveling up on thepost A as a guideway.' vWhen the lug G. strikes against thelug Hon the upward movement ofthe platform, then the latter is tilted intothe position shown in Fig. 3, the article supported on the platform then sliding down the same, l thereby swinging the chute E ontwardand into the opening of the ice-box or other receptacle, so that the block of ice or other article is directly guided into the ice-box through the open door of the same.` As soon as the block of ice has been deposited in the ice-box the operator presses on the free end of the pawl Q, so as to disengage the same from the ratchet-wheel R, whereby the frame B and the platform held thereon cause a downward sliding of the same on the guide-post A, therebynnwinding the ropeIfrom the drum K. The platform thus moves into a lowermost position to receive another block of ice, which is then elevated and deposited in the receptacle in the manner above described.
As shown in Fig. 2, the bearing D is somewhat to one side of the middle of the platform D, so that the latter when empty always returns to a normal horizontal position. (Shown in Fig. 2.)
When the frame B and platform D are not in use, they are held in an elevated position at the upper end of the post A, the lever P then being locked in place by the chain S, as shown in Fig. l, to prevent the automatic descent of the frame and platform. By the use of the chain S the frame and platform, with the articles supported thereon, may be held in any desired position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patentl. The combination, with a vertical post, of a vertically-sliding frame having arms embracing the post and provided with a horizontal pin projecting at right angles from its outer face, a platform pivoting upon the said Vplatform mounted at one side of its center of gravity uponsaid pin and` normally lying in a horizontal position andapin-and-slot connection between the platform andthe frame to `limit thetiltng movement of the latter, substantially as set forth.
4. Thecombination,withthevertically-sliding frame comprisingplate B',`arms B2 B2, and roller B3, of the horizontal .tilting platform on the front face of the plate and having a flange D3, provided with a slot D5, a pin passed through the slot into plate B', and the chute E, hinged at its. lower edge tothe dump ing edge of said platform, substantially asset forth.
5. An elevator comprising a verticalpost, a winding-drum at the lower endthereof, gearing for operating the drum, a lever having a pawl-and-ratchet connection with the said gearing to operate it, a guide-pulley4 at the upper end of the post, a frame sliding upon the post and having a pin `prol'iectingfrom its outer face, a normally-horizontal tilting platform mounted on said pin and having a lug and a downward-swinging chute at its dumping edge and a lug in the upward path of the rst lug to tilt the platform, and a rope extending from the drum over the guide-.pulley and down to the sliding frame', substantially as set forth.

Thecombination,withthevertically-sliding plate` comprising a plate B', provided with parallel arms Bvertical iianges B4, `roller B3 between the rear ends of arms B2, and the pin C, projecting at right` angles from the outer face of plate B', of the normally-horizontal platform D, mounted on the pin and having a rear end flange D4, outer side flange D2, and inner side flange D3, having a slot D5, a pin extending through the slot into the plate B', trip-lug G, and the inward inclined chute E, hinged at its lower edge to the dumping end of the platform, substantially as set forth.
