TOOL FOR TWISTING WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,459, dated December 6, 1892.
Application filed June 15, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTAIN A. UNDER- KIROHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegan, in the county of Allegan, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Twisting Wire; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools for twisting wire; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient tool to be operated by hand for the purpose of binding packages and limiting broken parts by confining the same within an encircling strand of wire, the ends of which, being twisted together by said tool, cause the wire to firmly environ the parts and retain them in position, which object is effectually accomplished by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a perspective View of the tool, showing the wire in position while being twisted. Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1, showing more clearly the notches or ways through which the wires pass.
Referring to the letters on the drawings, A is the body portion or stem of the tool and is rectangular in form, having the handle B on one end and the cross-head O on the other end thereof, both of which are formed integral with and extend at right angle to the body A of the tool in a parallel line to each other.

of, are two diverging studs 0 0, over which the wire 6 to be twisted extends after having been passed around the article to be bound and through the ways cl (1 of the handle 0, said studs 0 0 serving to retain the wire 6 within said ways, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The remaining ends of the wire e are wound about the pins 6 b, that project at right angles from the opposite sides of the body A at or near the center thereof, thus firmly securing the wire to the tool, which when turned by its handle 13 will cause the parallel portions of the wire between the article to be bound and the head 0 of the tool to be twisted or coiled, and by drawing outward on the tool in the act of twisting the same great tension will be given to the wire encircling said package or article, which will be firmly bound thereby, when the tool may be disengaged by cutting the twisted portion at suitable distance from the article bound or by a further turning of the tool until the strain shall be so great as to cause the wire to separate or break, which break would most likely occur at a point nearest the end of the tool, as the twisted or coiled portion of the wire adjacent to the package would ofier greater resistance than the single strand at the point of being twisted into said coil, as the binding of the strands at that point would weaken the surface of the metal suffi ciently to cause it to give way under the undue strain. The remaining ends of the wire may be readily disengaged from the tool by removing the coiled ends from the pins, when the wires will drop off.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that a tool of such construction will be of great utility in the manipulation of strands of wire for the purposes mentioned, and being of such form and construction as to enable its being cast of metal in one piece greatlyinures to its efficiency and cheapness.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a tool for twisting wire, the combination of the stem having the handle and crosshead formed at right angles thereto, said crosshead having the reversed ways in the opposed edges thereof for the reception of the wire, and the pins projecting from the body of said stein that retain the wire while being twisted, substantially as specified.
2. A tool for twisting wire, consisting of the stem, handle, and cross-head, said head having ways in its opposed edges, and the engaging studs and attaching-pins extending from said stem, and all of said parts being formed integral, substantially as specified. io
