UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BRUCE ROOT, OF SPRINGFIELD CENTRE, NEW YORK.
THILL-CO UPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,450, dated December 6, 1892. Application filed August 1, 1892. Serial No. 441,791. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM BRUcE RooT, of Springfield Centre,in the county of Otsego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Thill-Couplings, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the construction and operation of thill-couplings.
My object is to produce a t-hill-coupling which may be easily and readily detached and provided with a spring to prevent wear and rattling.
My invention consists in the several novelfeatures of construction hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claim heretoannexed. Itisconstructedasfollows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side View of the coupling complete as it appears when in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side View showing the end of the thill-coupling raised for the purpose of inserting the jaw-bar into the slotway upon the shoulder of the clip. Fig. 4is avieW similar to Fig. 1 with one side of the thill-iron removed. Fig. 5 is a view of the spring detached.
A is the thill-iron, secured to the thills in any ordinary manner, bifurcated at its end, forming the part 1 1. 2 is the drawba1- connecting them substantially centrally. The inner end of the recess formed by the arms 1 1 is concaved, as shown at 3, to conform itself to the outer end of the shoulder 4, and 5 is a downwardly and outwardly extending slotway in said shoulder 4, adapted to receive the draw-bar 2 in the thill-iron. Upon the inner upper edge of the shoulder4 I construct an inwardly-extending lug or arm 6, adapted to receive and retain the springi', which is adapted to bear with its lower end against the outer end of the thill-iron, as at a.
My invention is operated as follows: The spring 7 is first placed upon the shoulder 4, taking the position shown in the drawings. The thills are then raised substantially vertically until the draw-bar drops into the slotway 5, the concaved portion 3 traveling the outer face of the shoulder 4 until it assumes the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the spring 7 engaging with the outer edge of the thilliron, as shown. It will thus be observed that the said spring 7 exerts a constant tension upon the thill-iron to keep it from rattling, and so long as the thills remain in substantially a horizontal position it will be impossible for the draw-bar to be raised upward in the slotway 5. Itwill thus be observed that the thills may be readily detached by raising them to a substantially-vertical position.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A thill-coupling comprising the thill-iron A, having arms 1, the inner wall of the recess being concaved and adapted to travel upon the edge of the shoulder 4, the shoulder provided with a forward and downwardly extending slotway, and a U wire spring 7, interposed between the front face of the clip and the rear edge of the arms 1, substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of July, 1892.
W'M. BRUCE ROOT.
In presence of S. R. STEWART, GEo. H. STEWART.
