SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,447, dated December 6, 1892.

Be it known that I, EDWIN P. MOLANE, of Mount Carmel, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Game-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,

and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in game-boards, the object being to produce a simple and cheap device for playing a game of the Tiddledy-Winks type-which is to say, agame in which the point is to snap a small chip or counter into a certain place or places.

With these ends in view-my invention consists in the combination, with a board having its surface divided into compartments or spaces, of one or more revoluble rocking snappers loosely pinned directly to the said surface of the board upon which they rest and each consisting of a short piece of sheetmetal having one of its ends formed to normally stand above the said surface, any portion of which may be covered, so to speak, by properly revolving or training the snappers, which are operated by suddenly impinging their elevated ends upon the board.

As herein shown, the rectangular board A is marked olf into four circular compartments B B B B, consisting of corresponding circles arranged in a square and in contact with each other. I would have it understood, however, that I do not limit myself to any particular way of dividing the surface of the board, which may have any number of compartments of any desired arrangement and form. As herein shown, also, the board is provided in its respective corners with four revoluble rocking snappers C, each consisting of a short piece of sheet metal or other suitable material having rounded ends. Each snapper has aperforation c formedin itto receive a pin D, by means of which it is secured to the board, the perforation in the snapper be-' ing larger than the shank of the pin, and the head of the pin standing sufficiently above the surface of the board to permit the snapper to rotate freely on the pin and also to be rocked on the same as a center. Each snapper is thus virtually divided by the pin into a long and a short end, the latter being bent upward, so as to normally stand above the surface of the board, being so held by thesuperior weight of the long end of the snapper. It will be readily understood that if a chip E is placed upon the long end of one of the snappers and the short end thereof is struck a sharp blow with the finger that snapper will be quickly rocked on its center and the chip thrown ofi from its long end and toward the center of the board. If enough dexterity may be commanded, the chip may be thrown to any desired place upon the board with considerable surety, the snappers being thereto rotated or trained to cover, so to speak, the place upon which it is desired to land a chip. It does not matter how the game is to be played; but it may be suggested that if it be done by counting to throw the chips into one space will count higher than to throw them into another, and so on.

The so-called snappers of my improved toy may be likened to miniature catapults,

,and I am aware that toys having such devices for throwing bean-bags and marbles are old, and I do not, therefore, broadly claim a toy having such a device herein; nor do I broadly claim a game-board having its surface divided off, in combination with a catapult.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
