KNOB ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,416, dated December 6, 1892. Application filed June 29, 1892- Serial N0.438.37l. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CROMWELL 0. CASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new Improvements in Knob Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in knob attachments; and the objects of my improvements are simplicity of construction and convenience and efficiency in the article.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation of my knob attachment. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section with the knob-spindle in elevation, and Fig. 3 is aside View of the locking-disk.

V A designates the knob-spindle, of the ordinary square form, having at one end a knob B secured thereto in any ordinary manner.

C designates a knob to which my improvement is applied. This knob has a threaded hub 4. and a central hole or mortise adapted to receive one end of the ordinary knob-spindle. I also prefer to form a flange 5, which projects somewhat over the threaded hub, so as to form an annular recess between the two. Upon this hub is the screw-thimble 6, prefer ably provided with a square or angular portion for the application of a wrench. In that end of this spindle which is farthest from the knob is a collar 7, having a square hole adapted to fit the spindle, which collar may remain stationary on the spindle while the thimble 6 is rotated, said thimble and collar being held against movement in the direction of the axis of the spindle by any suitable means-as, for instance, by slightly heading the outer end, as shown at 8 in Fig. 2. In the chamber of the thimble, between the neck of the collar and the end of the hub 4. of the knob,I place the locking-disk 9, having an angular hole to fit the knob-spindle, the said hole and the edges of the disk extending obliquely to the side faces thereof, as shown in Fig. 3.

In use the knob B and the spindle A are inserted in the door, with the opposite end of the spindle projecting through the same. The thimble 6 of the knob having my attachment is unscrewed sufficiently to permit the hole in the disk to have its sides substantially parallel to the sides of the knob-spindle. The knob, with its attachments, is then placed on the spindle and slipped up against the rose and stopped at the desired point. The thimble is then screwed in, drawing the knob toward it, and as soon as the collar 7 bears on the side face of the locking-disk it has a tendency to bring them into parallelism and at the same time throw the edge of the disk and the side walls of its hole out of parallelism with the knob-spindle, thereby firmly locking said disk, together with the entire attachment, so that it cannot be accidentally removed.

I claim as my invention The herein-described knob attachment, consisting of the knob having a threaded hub, the thimble 6, having a collar 7 secured therein in a rotatory manner, and the locking-disk having oblique side walls for its central hole, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
