NIOKLOS H. BLOOM, OF NASI-IUA, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN F. LOOS, OF SAME PLACE.
VEHICLE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,414, dated December 6, 1892. Application filed July 15, 1892. $erial No. 440,154. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LNIOKLOS H.BLO0M, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Chickasaw and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Vehicle- Spring, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in vehicle-springs.
The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of springs for side-bar vehicles and to equalize the springs and to enable the springs at opposite sides of the vehicle to contribute equally in supporting the body.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a runningear provided with a vehicle-spring constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a reverse plan view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 00 so of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of one of the clips.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- 1ngs.
1 1 designate longitudinally-disposed rockshafts arranged parallel with side bars 2 of a running-gear and having their ends rounded and journaled in end body cross-bars 3 and being squared intermediate their ends and havingfixed on them laterally-extending arms 4 and approximately-verti(ally-disposed 1evers 5. The laterally-extending arms at are arranged at the ends of the rock-shafts and are provided at their inner ends with sockets 6, having rectangular openings to receive the rock-shaft, and their outer ends are provided with eyes and are suspended by shackles 7 from clips 8 of the side bars.
The levers 5 are provided intermediate their ends with sockets 9, having rectangular socket-openings to receive the rock-shafts. They are arranged atthe centers of the rock-shaft and extend upward and downward therefrom and converge slightly toward their upper ends, and the lower end of each lever is connected with the upper end of the other lever by crossed inclined bars 10, which are pivoted to the ends of the levers and which render the movement of the levers uniform and cause one rock-shaft to turn the same amount as the other. The upper arms of the levers are provided with recesses 11, in which are an ranged U-shaped bends 12 of spiral springs 13, which are disposed on the rock-shaft, and each of which consists of the said bend 12, and coils arranged at each side of the bend and on opposite sides of the adjacent lever, and outwardly-extending ends 14:, which are secured to the lower faces of intermediate body cross-bars 15, arranged on opposite sides of the levers.
The vertical movement of the cross-bars 3 and 15, which are designed to support a body, cause the rock-shafts by means of the laterally-extending arms 4 to turn, which causes a contraction and expansion of the spiral springs, and the crossed bars and levers render the movement of the springs uniform, so that they will contribute equally in supporting a body.
The clips 8 are provided with clip-plates 16, which have transverse bearings to receive the cross-piece of the shackles.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with side bars, of cross-- bars, a rock-shaft journaled in the cross-bars and having laterally-extending arms suspended from the side bars, levers provided intermediate their ends with sockets receiving the rock-shafts and being rigid with the same, crossed bars connecting the opposite ends of each lever, and springs disposed on the rockshaft and each consisting of a bend connected with the adjacent lever and coils extending from opposite sides of the bend and arranged on opposite sides of the lever, substantially as described. v
2. The combination, with side bars, of end cross-bars, squared rock-shafts arranged parallel with the side bars and having their ends journaled in the cross-bars, laterally-extending arms having rectangular socket-openings at their inner ends to receive the rock-shafts and having their outer ends suspended from the side bars, the levers provided intermediate their ends with rectangular socket-openings to receive the rock-shaft and provided in their upper arms with recesses, the crossed bars connecting the opposite ends of thelevers, and the spiral springs disposed on the rockshafts and each provided with a central bend engaging the recess of one of the levers and the oppositely-disposed coils having outwardly-extending arms, substantially as described.
3. The combination of side bars, the longitudinally-disposed squared rock-shafts provided at their ends with journals, cross-bars receiving the ends of the rock-shafts, the laterally-extending arms havingtheir inner ends provided with sockets receiving the rockshafts and having at their outer ends eyes, clips mounted on the side bars and having clip-plates provided with transverse bearings,
