SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,389, dated December 6, 1892.

Be it known that I, CHARLES S. FRANKE, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented an Improved Button, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a button for ladies jackets and for other purposes, which can be readily opened and can be easily attached to the garment.

It consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.

In Figs. 1 to 10 the letter (1 represents the lock-case, which may be inclosed by a suitable fur or other flexible covering 19. The flange a, of the lock-case a is slotted at three places, Fig. 2viz., at a for the reception of the laterally-entering head or catch 0 and at a a for the outward passage of a pair of sliding push-pins d. These push-pins have enlarged inner ends, which prevent the pins from falling out of the lock-case. The enlarged inner ends of the push pins bear against the pivoted locking-plates 6. These locking-plates have hook-shaped ends opposite the slot a that are adapted to grasp the head a as it enters through the slot. To open the button, the pins d are pressed inward to revolve the locking-plates and cause them to release the head 0. As soon as pressure on the push-pins is released the jaws of the locking-plates are again forced together by the locking-spring f, ready for the next introduction and-engagement with the head 0. The outwardly-projecting ends of the push-pins (1 should be concealed by the flexible coverlng b, Fig. 3, so that the button does not expose any of its operating mechanism.

To attach the button to the garment and the flexible covering to the button, I secure to the back-plate g a fastening-plate h by means of flaps g, struck out of the back-plate. These flaps enter slots h in the fastening-plate and are upset to hold the parts together. The fastening-plate h is provided with a pair of prongs, pins, or fasteners 2'. These prongs are thrust through the garment A and then a perforated washer j is slipped over their exposed ends, after which they are upset to attach the button in place.

In case the button is to be attached to a heavy or thick material-such as leather or fur-I make use of the fastening illustrated in Figs. 11 to 14. Here thefastening'plate 72. is provided with a hollow pin 2", composed of three disconnected plates, forming a truncated cone. Over this cone is slipped a triangular needle 70, which is forced through the garment, taking the pin '1' with it. Next the needle is removed, a washerj is slipped over the pin, and then the plates constituting the pin are bent apart to fasten the button in place.

What I claim is 1. The combination of case a,with lockingplates 6, push-pins d, spring f, back-plate 9, having proj ections g, a fastening-plate h, having a pin, and a flexible cover that incloses the case and push-pins, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of case a, with lockingplates e, spring f, push-pins d, and with backplate g, having projections g, fastening-plate h, having slots h, and a pin secured to the fastening-plate, substantially as specified.
