SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,376, dated December 6, 1892.

Be it known that I, OYRUS ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Three Rivers, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Cars, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad therein to the accompanyingdrawings.
-This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand-cars; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the drive mechanism and the support therefor whereby I obtain an effective driving mechanism, which occupies less room upon the car-platform than the ordinary gallowsframe, which enables me more readily to put the car into knockdown condition for shipping, and which enables me to use the car both as a hand-car and a push-car, all more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved car with the standard and actuating-lever detached. Eig. 2 is a vertical central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the standard and actuating-lever detached. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the standard at right angles to Fig. 2.
My car comprises the usual platform A, which may be supported upon any usual framework, such as that shown in the drawings, and composed of the longitudinal bars a and the cross-timbers b.
B are the axles, journaled in suitable bearings in the frame and supported at their ends upon suitable track-wheels O. One of the axles forms the drive-axle and has pivoted upon it the pinion D, with which meshes the gear-wheel E, secured upon the crank-shaft F, j ournaled in suitable bearings beneath the frame. This crank-shaft is jou rnaled to one side of the middle of the car a distance equal substantially to the length of the short arm of the actuating-lever, so thatnthe pivotal point of the connecting-rod between that 1e- Ver and the crank-shaft is substantially in Vertical line with the shaft in its normal position.
Heretofore in the construction of hand-cars of the type commonly known as the pumping hand-cars-that is, those which are actuated by the lever which works like a Walking-beam-a gallows-frame has ordinarily Serial No. 431,039. (No model.)
. have dispensed with the ordinary type of support for this lever and substituted in place thereof a standard preferably detachably secured to the platform, together with a detachable connecting-rod from the lever to the drive y mechanism.
Gr is the standard, provided at its lower end with a tapering bar H, engaging` in a socket I in the frame, bifurcated at its upper end. In the bifurcation isjournaled the actuatinglever J, having suitable cross-bars K at its ends. This lever at one side of the cross-bar has a pivotal connection for the connectingrod L, which connects the lever with the crank-shaft F. The connecting-rod is preferably made with a detachable connection to the crank and preferably consisting of a halfbearing M, formed in the lower end of the rod, and a half-bearing M in a lever M2, pivoted to the connecting-rod near the lower end and forming a tong-like device, clamping the crank, being held in position by rings M3, sliding over the upper end, as shown in the drawings. When the standard is detached to clear the platform, the connecting-rod may also be detached by raising the rings and opening` the bearing, as shown in Fig. 3.
The standard Gr preferably engages in the socket centrally of the car; but this is not necessary, as it may be placed at any other desired point. It is also preferably detachable and may be provided with a lock to prevent accidental displacement.
I have shown 'a sliding bolt O beneath the platform, engaging in a suitable aperture through the lower bearing H of the standard and having the upturned end P, which extends into the slot Q, formed in the platform for the movement of the connecting-rod.
This pin may be withdrawn when the lever is desired to be detached. The standard I preferably make of two metal bars c, separated by means of blocks d, through which pass the clamping-bolts e. is evident from the construction thus de scribed that the oscillation of the leverJ will propel the car with it, and as the standard is but a single vertical `piece it will take up much less room than the gallows-frame, and therebylargely increase the carrying capacity of the car, and that by withdrawing the pin or bolt O and disengaging the connecting-rod from the crank the standard and actuatinglever may be removed either for the purpose of using the car for a hand-car or for convenience in shipping.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a handcar, the combination of the platform, a removable standard thereon, an actuating-lever journaled in the top of said standard, and a detachable direct connection from said lever to the drive mechanism ofthe car, substantially as described.
2. In a hand-car, the combination of the platform, a removable standard detachably secured therein, an actuating-lever journaled in the top of said standard, and a detachable direct connection from said lever to the drive mechanism of the car, substantially as described.
3. In aA hand-car, the combination of the platform having a central socket therein, a standard having a bearing at its lower end, detachably engaging in said socket, a bifurcation at the upper end of the standard, a 1ever journaled in the bifurcation, and a detachable direct connection from said lever to the drive mechanism of the car, substantially as described.
4. In a hand-car, the combination of the platform, a socket therein, a standard detachably engaging therein, an actuating-lever journaledin the upper end of the standard, and a direct connecting-rod between the lever and the drive mechanism, having a detachable connection wi-th the crank extending above the platform, substantially as described.
