SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,334, dated December 6, 1892.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWIN OLDFIELD and PETER FLYNN, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Norwich,in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Kink-Preventers for Silk-Spinning Machinery, which improvements are fully set forth and described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying two sheets of drawings.
This invention relates to machinery for spinning or for doubling and twisting silk, and has for its object to prevent the kinking of the fine strands of silk when the machine is stopped; and said invention consists in a simple device formed as a wire loop which may be brought into service at the proper time to hold the strand of silk taut.
Our invention further consists in mechanisms connecting said wire loops with the belt shipping mechanism in such manner that the starting or stopping of the frame will serve automatically to bring into use or withdraw the entire series of kink-preventers throughout the frame.
It is a commonly-known fact that when a silk-spinning frame is stopped-as, for example, at the close of the days work or at the noon-hoursuch strands of silk as become slackened immediately double upon themselves and become badly kinked.- Owing to these strands being very fine and easily broken, the operation of straightening out such kinks becomes both a tiresome and ex-' pensive one. Frequently the strands are broken and have to be knotted, in which case the quality and value of the spun silk are materially lessened.
The drawings hereto annexed illustrate our invention, Figure 1 being a cross-sectional view of portions of a spinning-machine frame, showing in proper relation to each other the delivery-spool, the take-up bobbin, and such other portions of the machine as are immediately connected with our invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the beltshipper rod, also one of our kink-preventing devices, and of the parts by means of which action of the kink-preventers is efli'ected when the shipper-rod is moved in either direction, as hereinafter explained in detail. shows the driving-pulleys of the machine with portions of the belts coacting therewith, and also explains the manner of connecting the shipper-rod with the principal of said belts. In Fig. 4 I have shown the shaft which carries the series of kink-preventers, and also a supplemental shaft or rod upon which said preventers rest when in service. Fig. 5 is a front view, in elevation, of several of the delivery spools with their spindles and the belt by means of which the series of spindles is rotated. This View also shows the kink-pie venters in their elevated position-that is to say, the position which they occupy during the operation of spinning.
In the drawings, the letter a denotes the delivery-bobbin suitablymounted upon spindles b, here shown as provided with a pulley b, which is engaged and rotated at proper times by a belt a, which engages the rear side of the entire series of spindle-pulleys throughout the length' of the machine, as perhaps best explained by Fig. 5. The spindles bare journaled in the usual manner in the lower machine-rail b.

2. The combinati0n,-with the delivery-bobbins, of a spinning-frame, a series of wire rings of less diameter than the bobbin-flanges, as herein set forth, at least a complete circle of which is in the same plane and is adapted to touchthe top surface of the bobbin at all points when resting thereon, whereby the threads may be clamped between the ring and the top of the bobbin, said rings being formed helically and with an open space between the inner and outer coils, and means for raising and lowering said rings relatively to the bobbins, for the purpose specified.

In a spinning-fram e, in combination with the belt-shifting devices and the series of delivery-bobbins, a series of kink-preventers consisting of wire rings of less diameter than the bobbin-flanges with which they coact, at least a complete circle of each of said rings being in the same plane and adapted to touch the top surface of the bobbin at all points when resting thereon, whereby the threads may be clamped between it and the top of the bobbin, and mechanism intermediate the beltshipper and said preventenrings for lowering and elevating said rings, all being substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a spinning-frame, the combination, with the belt-shifting mechanism provided with stops, of a rock-shaft provided with a rearwardly-projecting arm, a series of kinkpreventers secured to said shaft, an angle-1e ver one end of which engages with the arm of the shaft, and a stud secured to the other arm of the lever, the front end of which is adapted to be engaged by the stops upon the belt-shifter, substantially as set forth.
5. In a spinning-frame, the combination, with the belt-shifting mechanism, of a rockshaft adapted to be connected with and operated by the movement of the belt-shifter,forwardly-projecting arms rigidly secured to said shaft, a rod in the outer ends of said arms, and a series of. kink-preventers loosely secured upon said shaft and having their outer portions resting upon and adapted to be raised by the rod when the shaft is rotated upon its axis, substantially as set forth.
