SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,321, dated December 6, 1892.

To all whom t may concern.;
Be it known that LALBERT GILBERT Dou- THIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Anderson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Seal- Press, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in seal-presses; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide a device of the character set forth, wherein the parts are of simple and effective construction and operation, strong and durable, easily handled, and readily understood.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a seal-press embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the parts thereof disconnected.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a stationary jaw having a socket 2, with ears 3 on opposite sides thereof, a front shouldered nose 5, and a rear handle or grip 4. The bottom of the socket 2 is below the handle 4:, and at the point Where said handle terminates a shoulder is formed,which prevents accidental displacement and disconnection at the rear of a sliding block 7. The ears 3 are formed with inwardly-projecting lugs 6, which movably coniinethe sliding block 7, mounted in the socket or recess 2 between the ears 3 and having a recess 8 in the upper side thereof. The lower engagingsurfaces of the lugs 6 are so arranged relatively` to the upper termination of the shoulder at the rear of the socket as to prevent the sliding block from tilting, and the distance between the rearmost termination of the said lugs and the front of said shoulder is less than the length of said sliding block to thereby continuously hold the said block in the socket. The said recess 8 is curved and engaged by the extended curved end 9 of an operating or clamping lever 10, which is mounted between and pivoted to the ears 3. By means of said operating or clamping lever 10 the sliding block 7 may be reciprocated to and from the shoulder of the nose 5 to press the seal between the said parts or release the same, as desired. The front portion of the operating or clamping lever 10 is formed with a shoulder or lug 1l, which bears upon the upper surface of the block 7 to limit the movement of the said lever and thereby prevent the block 7 from being moved too far tothe rear and always keep the same in proper engaging position with the shoulder of the said nose 5. Between the front terminations of the ears 3 and the shoulder of the nose 5 are formed openings or slots 12, through which the wire secured in the seal may extend laterally.
The block 7 is preferably constructed of steel, while the remaining portions of the device may be constructed of cast or wrought metal, as may be desired.
The convenience and utility of a device of this character will be readily apparent t0 those skilled in the art and need not be further enlarged upon herein.
In order that the seal-press may be made lighter, the inside of parts 1 and 10, repre-senting the handles, can be hollowed out.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a seal-press, the combination of a stationary horizontally-disposed jaw having a transverse shouldered nose rising from and extending across the front end thereof and ears vertically rising from opposite sides thereof in rear of said nose, having parallel straight inner sides and forming a transverse opening with the latter and also providing side walls inclosing a socket havinga rear terminating shoulder, said ears having upper inwardly-projecting lugs, a horizontally-sliding block formed with a top curved recess and mounted in said socket and movably confined under the said lugs, the distance between the rearmost terminations of said lugs and the front of the said rear shoulder being less than the length of the block, and an operating or clamping lever movable in a vertical plane from the horizontal. jaw
