M. R. SWISS.
IGNITION GAP FOR CIGARS 0R GIGARETTES. No. 487,232. Patented Nov. 29, 1892.
WITNESSES.
lNVENTOR Nrrnn STATES MORRIS R. SWISS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-TIIIRD TO JONAS HEOHT, OF SAME PLACE.
IGNITION-CAP FOR CIGARS OR CIGARETTES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,232, dated November 29, 1892.
Application filed June 3, 1892.
To coZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MORRIS R. SW1ss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ignition-Caps for Cigars and Cigarettes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved ignition-cap for cigars and cigarettes by which the cigars and cigarettes can be quickly and conveniently lighted even in a considerable draft of wind without injuring the flavor of the tobacco or without inhaling any fumes of the igniting composition; and the invention consists of an ignition-cap for cigars and cigarettes made of a sleeve, one end of which is closed by twisting it, coated with parafline and closed by a head formed of an igniting composition.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of a cigarette with my improved ignition-cap, showing different shapes of heads. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of Fig.2; and Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a side view of the cigarette and of the ignition-cap, shown as detached from each other.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a cigar or cigarette, which is provided at the butt-end with a sleeve 13, which is either made of white paper in the case of ordinary cigarettes or of brown paper in the case of all-tobacco cigarettes with tobacco wrappers. The sleeve B is made slightly larger than the butt-end of the cigar or cigarette, so as to be readily placed in position over the same, one end of the sleeve being open for this purpose, while the other end is closed by twisting it together. The twisted end I) is dipped into paraffine, varnish, or other inflammable substance, as at b, so as to render the closed end of the sleeve B highly combustible, the twisted end being then coated with an ignition-head C, that is formed of a composition of the same nature as that from which the heads of the well-known safety-matches are made, and the main ingredient of which is Serial No. 435,380- (No model.)
chlorate of potash. A red or other suitable bright color may be mixed with the composition, so as to impart an attractive finish to the ignition-head O. The head 0 is formed either at the outermost end of the twisted end 19 or so as to cover the same, as shown, respectively, in Figs. 1 and 2.
When it is desired to light the cigar or cigarette, the cap B is removed from the buttend of the same and the ignition-head ignited by passing it quickly over a frictionsurface of amorphous phosphorus, such as is used for i niting safety-matches, which friction-surface is applied to the box of cigarettes or to a match-box or carried in any other convenient manner. By the ignition of the head the paraffine-dipped end of the sleeve B is quickly lighted so as to burn with a flame and permit thereby the convenient lighting of the cigar or cigarette. By extending the head over a portion of the sleeve the cap may be used for lighting cigars or cigarettes even in strong wind. The unburned portion of the cap is thrown away after the cigar or cigarette is lighted. In cigarettes the sleeves are packed with the boxes, each cigarette being provided with a separate ignition-cap.
The advantages of my improved igniting device for cigars and cigarettes are, first, that the device is ready for use with each cigar or cigarette, and that it can be readily ignited on the friction-surface supplied with the same, and, secondly, that the cigar or cigarette can be lighted without inhaling any injurious fumes of the igniting composition, as the latter has to be entirely burned up before the cigar or cigarette is lighted, so that the flavor of the tobacco is not injured by the fumes of the igniting composition.
Having thus described my invention, what v. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. An ignition-cap for cigars and cigarettes, composed of a combustible sleeve twisted at one end and an ignition-head applied to the twisted end of the same, substantially as set forth.
2. An ignition-cap for cigars and cigarettes,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionlhave signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MORRIS R. SWISS.
