UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH O. DES CI-IAPELLES, OF HAVANA, CUBA.
REVERSlNG-GEAR FOR ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,115, dated November 29, 1892.
' Application filed March 30, 1892. Serial No. 427,099. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH 0. Des CHA- PELLES, of Havana, Cuba, have invented a new and Improved Reversing-Gear for Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved reversing-gear which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, requiring bntlittle power to accomplish the shifting of the valve.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fnllydescribed, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a perspective View of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the eccentric disk in section.
The main driving-shaft A of the engine is provided with a block B, engaging a diametrically-extending groove G, formed on the eccentric disk D, connected in the usual manner with the slide-valve of the engine.
In the disk D, on opposite sides of the groove 0, are formed inclined apertures E, through which pass the rods F, inclined in a like manner and secured on the face of a sleeve G, mounted to slide on the shaftAand turning with the same. In order to accomplish this movement of the sleeveG the shaft A is provided with a key H, engaging a keyway in the said sleeve, and on the latter is formed a hub I, adapted to be engaged by a shifting-fork, so as to conveniently move the disk D longitudinally of the said shaft A.
When the device is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the eccentric disk D actuates the slide-valve in the usual manner, and when it is desired to cut off sooner or reverse then the operator imparts a sliding motion to the sleeve G, so that the latter moves toward the disk D, and by the rods F causes the said disk to slide on the block B transversely of the shaft A. By so doing the eccentric disk is finally moved into an opposite position, whereby the valve is reversed. If it is desired to cut off sooner in either the reversed or the ordinary position, the operator but slightly shifts the sleeve G in the desired direction, so as to give more or less throw to the disk D.
It will be seen that this device is very simple and durable in construction and is composed of but few parts not liable to get out of order. It is understood that by shifting the sleeve G more or less on the shaft A more or less throw can be given to the disk D, and hence to the slide-valve, as the case may require.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A reversing valve-gear comprising the block B, secured on the main driving-shaft, the cocentric disk D, provided with a diametrical groove 0, in which the block fits, and with inclined apertures E on opposite sides of the groove, and the sleeve G, fitted to slide on and turn with the shaft and provided with the inclined rods F, projecting from one side through the inclined apertures of the eccentric disk, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOSEPH O. DES OHAPELLES.
