THILL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,005, dated November 29, 1892.
Application iiled April 27, 1892.
T @ZZ whom t may concern,.- A
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY HAN- NAN, acitizen of the United States, residingat Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thill-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
. This invention relates to a chill-coupling which is provided with a clamping device, whereby the thills can be readily attached to or detachedfroin the vehicle.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of the coupling and to render it reliable and etcientin operation. In the accompanying drawings, consisting of two sheets, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of a thill-coupling having an open draft-eye and provided with my improved clamping device, thepartsbeingshown in a coupled position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof showing the parts in an uncoupled position. Figs. 3 and 4. are vertical transverse sections in lines x :c and 'y y, Fig. l. y Fig. 5 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a thill-coupling having a divided draft-eye attached to the axle and provided with my improvements. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section in line e' z, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a side elevation, partly in section,of athillcoupling having a divided draft-eye attached to the thill-iron and provided with my improvements. Fig. 8 is a horizontal section in line u o, Fig. 7.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
In the construction represented in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, A represents the front axle, and B the thill-clip, secured to the aXle and provided with a tie-bar b. The front. end of the tie-bar is provided with a rigid draft O, which has the form of a semicircular hook and is provided with a socket d' in its upper side.
E represents the thill-iron, provided at its rear end with a knuckle or wrist e, which is seated in the socket d when the parts are in their coupled position.
F represents a clam ping-lever, whereby the knuckle of the thill-iron is firmly drawn against the draft-eye., This clamping-lever is arranged lengthwise underneath the drafteye and is pivoted with its frontend by apin Serial No. 430.882. (No model.)
g to a lug g', formed on the under side of a carrying-plate H, arranged lengthwise bef tween the draft-eye and the clampinglever. The carrying-plate is pivoted at its rear end by a pin h to a depending lug h', formed ou the rear portion of the draft-eye. The upper side of the carrying-plate is provided with a socket z', in which is arranged a block or fillinge, of rubber or other elastic material, which 6o` bears against the under side of the draft-eye.
J represents a link or loop, whereby the knuckle of the thill-iron'is connected with the clamping-lever. This link consists of two upright bars jj, arranged on oppositesides of the draft-eye and horizontal cross-bars J J2, connecting their upper and lower ends. The upper cross-bar J f passes horizon tally through the center of the knuckle, while the lower cross-bar J 2 is arranged in a transverse groove 7o or notch k, formed in the clamping-lever outside of the fulcrum of the latter. or groove k is sufficiently open to permit the link to be detached from the lever.
7c represents a stop formed ou the under 75- The notch Theknuckle 8o rearwardly on its fulcrum yuntil the lever rests against the stop ou the under side of the carrying-plate, whereby the knuckle is firmly drawn against the draft-eye and the rubber block is compressed. In this position of the parts the point at which the link is attached to the clamping-lever lies in rear of the fulcrum of the lever and thetension of the rubber block holds the lever locked against the stop, as represented in Fig. l, and exerts a constant downward pressure against the link and automatically takes up any wear of the parts. When therubber block becomes worn,it can be easily removed Jfrom the carrying-plate and replaced bya new on e. The carrying-plate isprovided in rear of its pivot with a toe k2, which roo strikes against the under side of the drafteye when the partsl are in an uncoupled position, as represented in Fig. 2, thereby lim'- iting the downward movement 'fof the carry: ing-plate and clamping-lever and preventing the rubber block from becoming detached.
In Fig. 5 and 6 my improvements are shown applied to a thill-coupling, in which the drafteye is composed of a lower rigid section Land an upper movable section L', hinged with itsl front end to the front end of the rigid section and provided at its rear end with a lipA l. In this construction the connecting li'nk or loop is permanently attached with its lower end to the clamping-lever and detachably connected with its upper end to the lip ofthe movable draft eye section. plate is pivoted at its front end and connected with theclamping-lever near its rear end.
If desired, myimprovements may be appliedtoa chill-.coupling iniwhicb the thill-iron is provided with a rigid eye-section m and.- a movable eye-section m', bothA sections einbracinga coupling-bolt. or Wristn, securedinears n formed on the clip B, as represented inFigs. 7 and 8.
I claimas my invention Y l. 'Ihefr combination, With th'edrafteye and the knuckleor Wrist seated in said eye, of a` movable carrying plate provided with an? elastic block orllingbearin/g againstsaid eye, aclamping-lever pivoted upon said plate, and aflink connecting the clampingplever with the part to which thevpressure is applied, sub stantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the draft-eyeandthe-knuckle or Wrist seated in sai-d eye, of a carrying-plate pivoted to said eye and-provided with an elastic-block or illin-gbearing against said eye, a clamping-.lever pivoted upon the plate, and a link connecting ther clampingflever with the part to-which the pressure is applied, substantially as set forth'.
8. The combination, with the draft-eyeand the knuckle or Wrist seated in said eye, of a carrying-plate pivoted to the eye and provided With a'socket, an elastic block or filling The carrying" seated in said socket and-bearing. against the eye, a clamping-lever pivoted ulponthelcarrying-plate, and a link connecting the clampinglever with the part to which the pressure is applied, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the draft-eye and the knuckle or wrist seated in the eye, of a carrying-plate pivoted to the eye and having a toe on one side of its pivot which is adapted to bear against the eye and provided with' an elastic block or filling which bears against the eye, a clamping-lever pivoted to said plate, and a link connecting the clamping-lever with the part to which the pressure isapplied, substantially asset forth.
5; The combination, with the draft-eye and the `knuckle or wrist, of a carryin-g-'platepivoted to the eye and havingaproje'cting'stop on its underside and an elastic block orfillin-gon its upper side, aA clampingflever pvoted to said yplate and striking'said stopwhen the clamp'ing-'leverv istightened, and alink Vconnectingthe clamping-lever'with thevpfart to which the pressure is applied, substantially as set forth.
6; The combination, with th eopen-draft-eyeprovided with a depending lugA and the knuck-lev or Wrist seated in said eye, rof`ac'ar rying-plate pivoted'to said lug. -andlprovided with asocket-in fron-t of its pivot, an elastic blocker filling seated in said socket and bearin-gjagainstsaid eye, a toeforrnedon thecarryingfplate in rearoff its pivotand adapted to bear against the eye, aclamping-lever'pivoted .tov the front `portion of 'said plate, alink'" connecting the clamping-lever withvthe knuckle, and a stop` formed on the carrying.;4
plate, whereby the tightening movement ofy the clamping-lever is limited, substantially as set forth.
Witness myhand this' 9th day of April, 18k-92.
