WARM-AIR REGISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,865, dated November 29, 1892. Application filed February 5, 1891. Serial No- 380,259. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to new and use; ful improvements in warm-air registers.
The object of this invention is to provide a warm-air register that shall be so constructed that when opened it shall provide afoot-rest, as will be described more fully hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a front view of a warm-air register embodying my invention as closed; Fig. 2, a side viewshowing the register as opened. Fig. 3 shows a front view of the foot-rest as detached, while Fig. 4 shows a rear view of the gravity-latch as employed in my device.

A represent-s a suitable supporting-frame of any suitable size, configuration, or material, having a suitable retaining-flange a and provided in front with an open-fretted guardplate B, extending across and below the lower half of the register-opening, as will be understood by referring to Figs. 1 and 2. At the upper edge of the register-opening I further provide a vertical recess B, within which the gravity-latch H reciprocates, being held by means of two laterally-projecting bars which ride upon the register-frame, as is illustrated in Fig 4.
0 represents a solid pivoted valve-panel which is secured centrally within the register. The valve 0 is preferably ornament-ed upon its forward or face side and comprises a solid panel centrally and horizontally pivoted within the register-opening and provided upon the rear with the foot-rest D and the perforated guard-fiange E. The foot-rest D may be cast integral with the panel C and is suitably curved and fashioned, so as to ofier a comfortable support for the feet. This footrest is of any suitable open fretwork (the area of the openings being equal to the area of the upper half of the register) and provided at a suitable point with the lug F, adapted to engage the gravity-catch H within the upper flange of the frame A, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The perforated guard-flange E is secured to the lower edge of the panel C and is adapted to catch and retain any arti cle that might fall through the open foot-rest D, thus preventing the article from passing into the flue.
Attached to the guard-flangeE are two bowsprings K, which are adapted to bind against the frame A, so that the valve-panel O, which is radially adjustable, may be held at any angle in gaging the register-opening.
When it is desired to remove any article within the perforated receptacle E, it is simply necessary to slide the gravity-catch H upward, when the rest may be tilted outward, the catch F passing through the opening B. When closed and at any intermediate point, the panel is supported and held by means of the springs K.
All parts are simple of construction and readily operated.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
1. In a warm-air register comprising a suitable supporting-frame, the combination of a solid valve-panel horizontally pivoted within said frame and provided with an open-fretted foot-rest, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a warm-air register comprising a suitable supporting-frame, the combination of a solid valve-panel horizontally pivoted and radially adjustable within said frame and provided upon the rear with a dirt-receptacle and an open-fretted foot-rest, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a warm-air register, the combination of the following instrnmentalities, to wit: the frame A, provided with the guard B, the valvepanel 0, provided with the foot-rest D and dust-receptacle E, the catch H, and the springs K, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
