EVERETT B. OSGOOD, OF VINELAND, NEI/V JERSEY.
BAKlNG-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,734, dated November 22, 1892. Application filed February 29,1892. Serial No. 423,247. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT B. OSGOOD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vineland, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Baking-Pans and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of a portion of my improved pan with the handle applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end View of the pans. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the lockingarm. Fig. 4. is a sectional view of the pans on the line a: x, Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is a reverse end view. Fig. 6 is a sectional View on the line J y. A Fig. 7 is an end view of the pans, showing a modified form of the locking-arm.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in bake-pans; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a pan of any suitable size or shape and provided with a cover B, which consists of a similar pan or receptacle-placed thereover in inverted position. This cover has a hinged connection with the pan, the hinge consisting of a plate C, secured to the cover and provided with a curved projection or lug c. To the pan is secured a plate D, having an upwardly-projecting portion D', which is formed with a horizontal slot CZ, running in from one lateral edge thereof. This slot is engaged by the lug c, which serves as a pintle on which the upper pan or cover may be raised, and when in such position is normally held from disengagement by a shoulder d', formed in the upper wall of the slot. By this arrangement the upper pan or cover when raised is prevented from slipping either endwise or sidewise. The plateD also has abearing for a handle-loop E. In the drawings I have shown this hinge applied to one end of the pans; but it is obvious that, if desired, it may be applied equally well to one of the longitndinal edges.
F designates the lock for the opposite edge or end of the cover, and is shown as consisting of a horizontally-swinging arm F. This arm is slightly curved or bent and hasahook G at its lower end, which is adapted to engage a lug or projection g on the pan A to effect the lock.
I-I designates a removable or detachable lifter or handle designed to engage the arm F. This handle is shown in Fig. l as having a shank formed with a toe or claw bent at right angles thereto and adapted to engage an eye or loopZ on the arm F. The arm F is pivotally connected to a plate F2, which is attached to the upper pan or cover slightly to the left of the center, so that when the pan is operated by the handle of the lifter the arm will swing toward the opposite or heavier side and will be stopped by a lug or proj ection Z2 on the plate F2, engaged by its upper edge. This projection Z2 is so located that it will allow the arm F to swing just far enough to the right to allow the hook G to pass under the lug g on the lower pan when the cover is brought back to place. A second lug or projection Z is provided on the plate F2 to limit the counter swing of the arm. In place of the stops Z2 Z an oblong slot m may be cut in the arm, as shown in Fig. 2, which engages a pin or lug m on the plate F2 and limits the swing of the arm. By means of this handle the upper pan or cover may be unlocked from the lower and be partially lifted from the pan to inspect the contents without the use of mats and without danger of burning the hands; or the cover may be entirelyremoved by means thereof, the hinge being disconnected. By raisin g the handle-loop E over the eye or loop Z before applying the handle the entire pan may be lifted.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a modification of the lock and lifter. In this construction the lock comprises an arm K, having a swing toward and away from the pans, and having at its lower'portion an eye Za, which engages a lug or projection 7o on the lower pan. The handle or lifter comprises a shank having a claw thereon consisting of three prongs or fingers h h and ZL'. The middle finger h is shown as slightly longer than the fingers h Z2, and out of the plane thereof, and is designed to engage a notch z', formed on the arm K, the {ingers h h engaging the under surface of said the cover comprising a similar receptacle hinged orpivotally connected thereto and carrying aswinging arm designed to engage the lower pan and form a lock, of a handle or lifter arranged to detachably engage said swinging arm, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the pan A, having the horizontally-slotted projecting plate secured thereto, of a cover having a curved lug or projection thereon adapted to loosely engage the slot of said plate and normally held from disengagement bya noteh formed in the wall of said slot, substantially as specied.
4. The combination, with the cover having the swinging arm thereon adapted to engage a lug or projection on the pan and form a lock, of the detachable handle or lifter having,r its shank adapted t0 engage said arm, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EVERETT B. OSGOOD. \Vitnesses:
