Be it known that1, JAMES NELSON SCUDDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Can ton, in the eounty of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefnl Improvements in Sheep-Feeding Racks and Mangers; and I d0 hereby declare the follow ingto be a full, e1ear, and exact desoription 0f the invention, such as will enable 0thers skilled in the art t0 which it appertains t0 make and use the same.

My invention'has relation to feeding-racks f0r sheep; and the object is to provide a simple, eonvenient, and inexpensive form of rack and manger combined; and to this end the novelty consists in the constructioncombination, and arrangement of the several parts 0f the Same, as Will be hereinafter more full v described, and particularly pointed out in the elaims.

In the accompanyingdmwings the same letters of reference indicate 1ike parts of the invention.

Fignre 1 is a view in perspective of my unproved sheep rack and manger combined, as it appears Set up and ready for use; and Fig. 2 is a transverse seetion 0f the same on the line of one 0f the hinges and havingthe cover removed.

Upon an ordinary and suitable base-board is mounted a frame eonsisting of two girders A A, upon which is secured a. series of triangu1ar strips a a, so that there is left a small space a'.between each strip, and the frame itself is hinged at a a to the base proper, and the said frame formsthe floorof the rack and manger. T0 thiS fra1ne are secured the closed A-shaped end pieees B B, sides B B, and partition B which divides the manger into seetions.

Hinged to the sides B B, 011 eaeh side thereof at b b, is a slatted frarne O, and each frame is provided With aslot c, through which passes a lever c, pivoted t0 the partition B and it has two notches d d, whieh rest in the bottom of the slot c, by means of which the frames O may be locked in a closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, while the animals are feeding', 01 may be held open to fill the rack, as shown in Fig. 2.

E is a light sheet-metal wing 0r eover, hinged at e e to the ridge-pole F, which counects the ends B B and partition B and said cover is provided with a spring-lever handle G, whiclfiengages With anotched knee H and retains the eover in an elevated position,when desired, whereas by releasingr the handle G the cover may be closed over eitherside of the rack, thus converting it into.a Single feeder, when neeessary. A pair of knees, one of which is shown at h, are seeured 110 the base, and in conneution with the hinges a a p event the displaeement of the rack from the base when it is in use.

The hay, straw, or fodder is placed in the rack, the frzunes O O being thrown outward, as shown in Fig. 2, t0 f-aeilitate the operation, and after it is filled the frames are then elosed and the animals have aecess to the food through the spaces formed by the slats 0f the frames, and whateverdirt, dust,orother foreign matter there may be in the food will be separated therefrom by the agitation of the fodder in the act of feeding, will fall t0 the bottom, and not being ab1e to rest upon the triangular slats forming the fioor will drop through and be caught by the base-board, thus insuring only clean, healthy food being supplied and proteeting the eyes, nose, and W001 of the animals from the chafif and Iitter. After feeding, the manger proper may be tilted over 011 the base by means 01: the hinges a a and the refuse collected on the base-board readily removed.

Having thus fully deseribed my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent of the Uni ted States,

1. Acombined sheep rack and manger cousisting of a base having hinged thereto the girders A A, npon whieh are mounted the triangular strips a, end pieces B, sides B, and hinged slatted fram es C, substantially as and f0r the pnrpose Set forth.

2. In a combined sheep rack and manger, thecombination, with the base havinghinged thereto the girders A A, upon whieh are mounted the triangular strips a, the end pieces B, sides B, and the hinged slatted frames O, of the cover E, hinged t0 the upper ends of the end pieees B, the downwardly-depending spring-lever handles G, secured to cover E, and the knee H,secured to end piece B, with which said lever is adapted to engage, substantially as described.
