P. HOOGERZEIL.
WHEELBARROW.
No. 486,469. Patented Nov. 22, 1892.
. nections, as shown in the drawing.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER HOOGERZEIL, OF BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS.
WH EELBARROW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,469, dated November 22, 1892.
Application filed A t 24. 1892. Serial No.443,969. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER HOOGERZEIL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beverly, in the county of Essex and State ofMassachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in WVheelbarrows, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wheelbarrows; and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which represents a perspective View of the improved wheelbarrow.
A A represent the shafts, to the forward end of which is journaled the axle B, provided with the wheel B, as usual.
C is the stationary bottom, secured to the shafts or frame of the wheelbarrow, as is common in devices of this kind.
D is the upright end or back board, secured and braced in a suitable manner to the frame of the wheelbarrow, as usual.
E E are the adjustable side pieces, each one of which is hinged in a suitable manner to the side of the wheelbarrow and has attached to its rear end and at a right angle, or nearly so, to such side piece a segmental plate or wing E, adapted to be guided, preferably, in a groove or recess d, located between the back board D and a stationary piece D, secured to the frame or back board or other stationary part of the wheelbarrow, as may be most practical and convenient. The wings E E may, however, be guided in any other suitable manner, as may be desired, without departing from the essence of my invention. It will thus be seen that the side-boards E E may be swung and adjusted relative to the bottom 0 from a vertical to horizontal and intermediate positions, as may be desired, according to the load that is to be carried. In connection with each of the said pivoted side-boards E E, I use a suitable locking device for the purpose of securing them in their adjusted positions relative to the bottom board 0, and l have for this purpose shown the curved edge of each wing E, provided with notches or depressions e 6, adapted to interlock with an eccentric or cam shaped pivoted locking-pawl F, that is pivoted at f to the back board D or its con: I desire,
however, to state that I do not limit myself to the precise manner and device for locking and securing said side-boards in theiradjusted positions, as this may be done by other snitable mechanism without departing from the spirit of my invention. I have represented in the drawing in full lines one of the sideboards held in an upright and the other one in an inclined position relative tothe bottom board, and in dotted lines I have shown both Sideboards swung into a horizontal plane with the bottom board 0. Either one of the pivoted side-boards may be detached from the ,F wheelbarrow, when so desired, simply by swinging such side-board sufficiently outward until its segmental wing E passes entirely out of the guide-recess d, when the side-board may be slipped off its hinges or pivots and removed. Thi'sconstructionisverysimplean 7o practical and it renders a wheelbarrow very useful for a variety of purposes. The holding capacity of it can be changed at pleasure, the floor or bottom surface increased, and the side-boards removed from the wheelbarrow whenever so desired.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent andclaim- 1. A wheelbarrow having pivoted adjust- 8o able side-boards adapted to be secured in any desired positions relative to the bottom board, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A wheelbarrow having pivoted adjustable side-boards adapted to be secured in any desired positions relative to the bottom board and having a locking device for holding each of said boards in its adjusted position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a wheelbarrow, the pivoted adjustable side-boards having end pieces at right angles, or nearly so, thereto and a locking device for securing said side boards in their adjusted positions, substantially as set forth. 5
4. In combination with a wheelbarrow, the pivoted adjustable side-boards having segmental wings or end pieces at right angles, or nearly so, thereto and means for locking said side boards in their adjusted positions, sub- :00 stantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
5. In combination with a wheelbarrow, the
pivotedadjustableanddetachableside-boards their adjusted positions relative to the botadapted to be secured in any desired positom board, substantially as and for the purtions to or detached from the bottom board pose set forth.
and having a locking device for securing In testimony whereof I have signed my them in their adjusted positions relative to name to this specification, in the presence of the bottom board, substantially as and for the two subscribing witnesses, on this 19th day of purpose set forth. August, A. D. 1892.
6. In a wheelbarrow, the pivoted adjustable PETER I'IOOGERZEIL. side pieces having wings or end pieces, as described, combined with guides for the latter and means for locking said side-boards in Witnesses:
ALBAN ANDREN, ALBERT BOYDEN.
