M. BOURKE. FASTENER FOR THE MEETING RAILS 0F 'SASHES.
No. 486,425. Patented Nov. 22, 1892.

I UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrce.
MARTIN BOURKE, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
FASTENER FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,425, dated November 22, 1892.
Application filed April 9,1892- fierial No. AZ8A63- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN BOURKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain newand usefulImprovements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view showing my improved fastener applied to the two sashes of awindow-frame; Fig. 2, a sectional View thereof; Fig. 3, an end and sectional view, respectively, of the cam-thimble.
The present invention has relation to that I class of sash-fasteners for which a patent was granted to me June 29, 1886, No. 344,436, and is designed as an improvement thereon, whereby the screw-thread on the end of the bolt and the screw-threaded plate to receive the same are dispensed with and a cam device substituted, thus enabling the fastener to operate more perfectly and decreasing the cost of manufacture, as well as rendering the device much stronger and more durable, as there are no screw-threads to Wear out upon the end of the bolt.
The invention consists in a fastener constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
1n the accompanying drawings, A represents a portion of the upper sash of a window-frame, and B the lower sash, both of which are of the usual construction.
To the side rail of the upper one of the sashes is suitably connected a thimble O, which is provided in the present instance with a cam-shoulder a upon its interior and upon its exterior with screw-threads b, by which it is held in a mortise formed in the side rail. Now in order to screw the thimble in the mortise it will be necessary to provide means for that purpose, and thereforeI have formed or provided the thimble upon its outer end with a depression 0, diametrically opposite the groove cl, whereby a screwdriver may be used therewith, the depression and groove serving together the same purpose as the groove in the head of a screw. Without departing from the principle of my invention it is evident that the thimble may be secured to the side rail of the sash in anywell-known and preferred manner without the use of the screw-threads, and the camshoulder may be upon the outside or exterior of the thimble instead of the interior, which modification would serve the same purpose. Any changes or modifications that would come Within ordinary mechanical skill I reserve the right to make without departing from my invention. Any number of these thimbles with the cam-shoulder thereon may be used as found desirable, so that the sashes may be firmly locked in a closed position or opened to any height and firmly and se curely held there.
As in my former patent, the top rail of the lower sash has a bracket or guide-plate D, secured thereto by screws or other preferred means, and upon the plate is supported the short standard e, which has upon its upper end a bearing-sleeve E to receive a bolt F, which is adapted to turn therein. This bolt has upon its outer end a thumb-piece f and upon its inner end or that portion projecting beyond the sleeve a lug g to act in conjunction with the cam-shoulder wat to draw the two sashes together tightly against each other, so as to prevent the sashes rattling, and also prevent the air from passing into the room, and, further, to securely lock the sashes in their adjusted position, either open or closed.
In the operation of the device it Will be noticed that the standard, with the bearingsleeve thereon, is capable of lateral adjustment upon the guide-plate, so as to bring the bolt on line to register with the opening in the thimble. When this is done, the bolt is turned so that the lug thereon will register with the groove d in the thimble, after which the bolt can be engaged with the thimble, and when said bolt is turned the lug will ride over and upon the cam-shoulder and firmly and securely draw the two sashes together and hold them either opened or closed.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire tov secure by the interior cam-shoulder of the thimble, Letters Patent, issubstantially as specified.
The combination, with the thimble having In testimony that I claim the above I have exterior threads and interior cam-shoulder hereunto subscribed my name in the presence 5 and at its outer end a depriession c and diaof two Witnesses.
metrically-opposite groove of the bracket, 1 the standard thereon, the bearing-sleeve at MA R1 IN BOURKE the upper end of the standard, and the bolt Witnesses: supported in said sleeve and having thumb- L. G. HILLS, 10 piece with a lug to act in conjunction with WM. H. DE LACY.
