SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATIN forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,340, dated November 15, 1892.
Application filed Ma 13. 1892. Serial No. 432,890. (No modal) T0 au whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, JOHN W. KALES, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Franklinville, in the oounty of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in sash-holders; and it has for its objeot, among other purposes, to prevent the rattling of the sashes, t0 exclude cold, wind, and dst by producing a close or air-tight joint between the sashes and parting-strips, and to prevent the jamming or wedging of the sashes when swollen from damprless; also, to automatica]ly retain the sashes at any desired point to which they may be raised or lowered.
To thcse ends myinvention consists in the detailed construction and combiuation of the parts, al1 substantially as hereinafter more ful1y disclosed, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partly in section, of a window,showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a broken detailed perspective view thereof. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detailed views of the roll or wheel, its inclosing case, and washer, respectively.
In' the embodiment of my invention I provide each sash with one or more rubber or elastic rolls or wheels A, within the center of each of Which is inserted a metallic tubular bearing or bushing a for the axial screw described further on, and I inclose or place this roller or wheel in a ciroular casing or housing B, having a segment or portion removed. 'Ihe casing or housing B also has one side removed and the edges of that side beveled or tapered, as at 1), to enable the sarne to enter the eut or indentation producedby the li ps of a boring instrument or auger used to bore a hole or cavity 0 for the reception of said casing or housing. The cavity or hole 0 is bored from the edge of the stile of the sash and in such manner that a line extending along the face of the stile will-cut a segment from said cavity or ho1e, as at c,thus allowinga slight segment of the roller or wheel A to project therethrough and engage the blind-stop d et the window-frame in the case of the upper sash, while the roller of the lower sash bears against the inside stop-strip d. Thus a slight space is left between the sashes and the blind and inside stop-strips to alloW for the swelling of the sashes in damp weather, and yet the clasticity of the rolls or wheels will keep the sashes tight under all conditions and thus prevent the rattling of the sana e, exclude dust, cold, and wind,and also automatically retain them at the desired point to which they may be raised or l0wered, respectively.
An axia1 screw 3 is inserted through an aperture in the closed side of the casing B and the tube or bushing a in the roll or wheel A, its inner threaded end entering the sash, and upon said axis or screw and between said roller or wheel and the sash is placed a metal washer f to prevent frictional contact between the roll or wheel and the sash.

In a sash-holder, the cornbination, with an elastic roll or wheel and its axial securing screw, of the casing or housing therefor adapted to permit said roll or wheel t0 project therethrough and having the edges of its open side beveled or tapered to enter a ont or indentation in the bottom of the cavity to receive said casing or housing, substantially as set forth.
