NELSON E. BRADFORD, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
VEHICLE-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent, No. 486,064, dated November 8, 1892.
Application tiled July 11, 1892. Serial 110.439.700- (No model.)
T0 all whom it may con/cern:
Beit known that I, NELsoN E. BRADFORD, a
gheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication.
My invention relates to an improved apparatus for repairing vehicle-wheels; and it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a portion of a vehiclewheel, showing my improved apparatus in position for tightening the spokes of the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of myimproved jack. Fig. 3 is a face View of the same. Fig. 4 is a view of the lever used for operating the apparatus.
To put my invention into practice, I provide two bars 4 5 and couple the same side by side by means of clasps 9. Formed on the one end of the piece 5 is afork 11, adapted to engage with the felly l of a vehicle-wheel, and the said piece 5, provided with a rackbar or ratchet 10, adapted to engage with a pivoted pawl 8, attached to the upper. end of the piece 4. Formed on the edge of the bar 4 are a series of projections 6 and on the bar 5, provided with a single projection 7, which affords a means for elevating the bar 4 with a lever 13, such as shown at Fig. 4 on the drawings.
In operation the jack is used for tightening the spokes and felly of vehicle-wheels and when in use occupies a position such as shown at Fig. l on the drawings. To tighten the tire of a Wheel, the jack is adj usted as described and the lever inserted over the projection 7 and under one of the projections 6 and a downward pressure placed on the said lever I3, which elevates the bar 4, and the pawl 8, engaging with the rack l0, holds the said bar in that position. This operation is continued until the felly is sprung from the spoke 2, and a piece ot' suitable material-such as leather, wood, lac-inserted beneath the said spoke. The pawl 8 is disengaged from the rack and the jack released and applied opposite another spoke and the same operation continued.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described apparatus for repairing vehicle-wheels, consisting of the two bars 4 5, coupled together and the one capable of sliding Within the other, a rack-bar formed on the inner face of one of the said bars, and a pawl pivoted to the top of the other, aforked end Il to engage with the felly of the wheel, and a curved base 12, formed on the other bar to engage with the hub of the said Wheel, and a suitable means formed on the edges of the said bars wherebya lever may be used to elevate or lower the movable bar 4, all arranged and combined for service substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 29th day of June, A. D. 1892.
