COMBINED SIDE AND CENTER BRACE ATTACHMENT FOR STEP-LADDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,900, dated November 8, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST OTTo TANNEN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Side and Center Brace Attachment for a Step-Ladder; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in a combined side and center brace attachment for a step-ladder, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings; and the objects of my invention are to provide braces for a stepladder that will enable same to be used Without risk of injuring body or limbs of a person, and'at same time provide a steady support for the step-ladder. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure l is a front view. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 is a detail front view. Fig. 4. is a detail side view.

In the drawings, A refers to the front portion of a step-ladder; B, the rear part of a stepladder, which is connected to the front part A by links 17, as shown.
C are lateral braces attached on each side of A by means of suitable hinges, and when the step-ladder is in use are drawn out from the sides of the part A, as seen in the dotted lines in Fig. 1 and as shown in Fig. 2, thus giving an increased base for step-ladder.
D are metal braces, which are pivoted between plate E and hinge F, and are provided with slots for engaging a lug or projection on sides of rear portion of step-ladder B, thus bracing the rear part of step-ladder and preventing it from collapsing or closing when in use. By the provision of the links I), in conjunction with the front and rear parts A and B and the slotted braces D, it will be perceived that the part B may readily be folded against the part A, the said part B being pre viously disconnected from the brace D by simply lifting the braces up and out of engagement with the lugs.

At a point on the part A, designated H, I place two eyes, which are secured in the usual manner and between which the eye K on brace O rests when the step-ladder is folded or the braces are not in use, and by simply inserting a piece of wire or nail through eyes H and K a secure fastening is made. The hinges F of braces C are held in position by means of a pivot rigidly attached to plate E, said pivot also engaging arms D, which rest on plate E.
In practice the step-ladder is used in the same manner as usual, except when in position, when the braces O are drawn out and engage the arms G in the manner shown in Fig. 3, thus giving an increase of base and steadiness to a step-ladder, while the braces D engage the rear portion of a step-ladder.
A striking advantage of my invention is its economical construction and security from injury oifered in use of same.
Having described my invention and. the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, I would say in conclusion that I do not limit myself to the precise details herein described, as the same may be varied to some extent; but
