Description
2 Sheets-Sheet 2. D. LIPPY.
Fruit Drier.
No. 48,570. Y Patentd July 4,1865.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID LIPPY, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
FRUIT-DRIER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,570, dated July 4,1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. LIPPY, of Mansfield, Richland county, State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Frnit-Dryin g Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- 7 v Figure 1, Sheet No. 1, is .a vertical section of my invention, taken in the line mm, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, Sheet No. 2, is a vertical section'of the same, taken in the line 3 3 Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved device for drying fruit and it consists in a novel arrangement of a furnace, dampers, and drawers, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby fruit may be dried expeditiously and with but a small expenditure of fuel.
A represents a building, which may be of any suitable dimensions, and B is a furnace placed.
in its lower part and extending its whole length.
This furnace may be constructed of iron or masonry. It is of less width than the building A, so as to allow a space, a, at each side of it, and it has a horizontal plate, 0, a short distance above it equal in area to the top of the furnace, and another plate, D, is placed a short distance above 0, the latter being provided with a register, E. The plate D does not extend the whole width of the house or building A, a space, b, being allowed at eachside of it,
I represents ventilators placed at each end Y of the building and provided with registers e,
and J represents registers placed in the ceiling K of the building, affording, when open, a communication with the loft or apartment above, the ends of which are provided with openings f.
The operation is as follows: The fruit to be dried is placed in the drawers F, and a fire being kindled in the furnace B, the heat ascends, the plates 0 D breaking the heat or shielding the lower drawer from it. By opening all of the dampers G H the heat ascends upward, as indicated by the arrows 1, and by closing the dampers G and opening the register E the heat will ascend upward through the=centers of the drawers only, and by closing the dampers H the heat will ascend upward by the sides of the drawers. Thus the fruit may be uniformly dried throughout by regulating the dampers, as described. The ventilators I are opened to admit of the escape of steam. They are closed when all the steam has escaped from the building. An excess of steam is prevented by opening the registers J. Having thusdescribed my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A series of drawers, F, provided with slatted bottom 0 and dampersO, and arranged with dampers H at their sides, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The furnace B, having two plates, 0 D, above it, one of which, D, is provided with a register, E, all being arranged in connection with the drawers and dampers to operate as
