Be it known that I, WALTER MELIUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to brushes of the class known as daubers, having a head-band open at. top and bottom to allow the bristles to be securely placed within said head-band, and has for its object to provide suitable means for securing a cap on the top of the bristles. This I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a plan View of a brush embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, taken through the center of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a head-band and handle. Fig. 4 is a plan View of a cap. Fig. 5 is a sectional perspective view of a modification of my invention.

' As illustrated in the drawings, A represents a head-band open at its upper and lower edge and preferably provided with a scraper a. A handle 13 is formed integral with said headband, and a transverse slot 1) is formed in the casting composing the handle and head-band at the junction of the two parts and preferably in the head-band.

19 represents a flange extended from the edge of the handle to the head-band to strengthen the shank of the handle.

A knot of bristles D is secured at its upper end within the headband by means of cement or other suitable means, anda cap 0, having a circular main portion and a laterally-extending lip c, is placed upon the top of the knot of bristles. The lip o of the cap is inserted through the transverse slot and is secured to the under side of the shank of the handle by means of a rivet E, passing through an opening b, formed in said shank, and a corresponding opening 0' in the lip c of the cap. The cap is placed within the upper edge of the head-band, which prevents lateral displacement of the same. By securing the lip c of the cap below the handle instead of above it and drawing it firmly to said under side the forward edge of the handle adjacent to the slot b presses against the cap forward of the rivet E and holds the cap down on the top of the knot, and the natural stiffness of the cap causes the forward portion of the same nearest the scraper a to bear down firmly on the bristles, Whereas when a cap is secured to the upper surface of the handle the forward portion of the cap rises naturally out of place, requiring the aid of auxiliary devices for holding the same in position. Instead of the rivet E the lips of the cap may be secured to the under side of the handle by other suitable means, such as the retaining-lips b (Shown in Fig. 5.) I prefer in many instances to use this last-named construction for the reason that the shank of the handle is not thereby weakened by making an aperture for the rivet and the retaining-lips obtain a more secure hold on the cap.

IVhat I claim is l. The combination, with a knot of bristles, of a head-band and handle formed integral with each other and provided with a transverse slot formed at the junction of the same and a cap provided with a laterally-extending lip engaging said slot and secured to the under side of the handle, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination, with a knot of bristles, of a head-band and handle formed integral with each other and provided with a transverse slot formed at the junction of the same and a cap provided with a laterally-extending lip engaging said slot and secured to the under side of the handle by means of retaining-lips formed on said handle, substantially as shown and described.
