in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a novel construction in a sofa-bed or combined bed and lounge,

the object being to provide a device of this construction that will be of durable, simple, and

inexpensive construction and that will occupy a comparatively-small amount of space when folded up to make a lounge, but which will provide a commodious bed when unfolded.

The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafterfnlly described and specifically claimed. In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a sofa-bed constructed in accordance with my invention when being used as a sofa. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the device unfolded and ready for use as a bed. Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section of one of the arms of the sofa. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail sectional view of the joint between the base and back.

Referring to said drawings, A indicates the main frame of the device, comprising the rectangular base B, supported by legs 1. Beneath the bottom 2 of the base B and between the legs 1 is arranged a receptacle or chest 3, within which bed-clothing can be stored when not in use. The said chest is closed in front by a suitable door 4, that is ordinarily concealed by the tapestry or fringe 5 that hangs from the base B. As shown in Fig. 3, when the device is used as a bed the base B forms one of the sections thereof, and to this end said base is provided with bed-springs 6, that rest upon the bottom piece 2 of the base and are covered and held in place by a covering 7 of flexible material.

The seat 8 of the lounge is hinged at its bottom forward edge to the top forward edge of the base B, so that it is adapted to swing out to the horizontal position shown in Fig. 3 to form the bed. The said seat 8 is provided :with a series of springs 9, held between the flexible top and bottom coverings 10 and 11.

As a further and separate improvement in, the construction of said seat,'the springs 9' are secured about midway between their ends ,to a strip or partition 12, extending between the sides of the seat. In this way the springs 9 have a double action and serve to provide a spring-seat when the lounge is made up and to provide a spring-bottom for the bed when the seat is extended, as shown in Fig. 3.

The back 13 of the lounge embraces two members 14 and 15. The member15 is hinged at its lower edge to the top rear edge of the seat, while the member 14 is hinged at its top edge to the top edge of said member 15. The

member 14 is provided with springs 16 that form a spring-back, while the member 15 is provided with springs 17, that form a suitable spring bed-bottom when the back 13 is thrown back to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 3, and the member 14 raised to an upright position with relation thereto. A chain or cord 18 is secured to the said members 14 and 15 and serves to hold the member 14 in an upright positiomas shown in Fig.3. It will thus be seen that the member 14 forms the head of the bed, while a foot-piece 19, hinged to the free end of the seat, forms the foot-board of the bed. The member 14 of the back is further provided with a projection 20, that is located behind the seat when the device is made up for a lounge, whereby the said member 14 is held in place while the lounge is made up.

At each end of the lounge are located two arm-rests or arms 21, that are pivotally connected at their forward ends to the upper end of abent lever 22, that is pivoted to the base B. To the rear end of said arms are secured curved fingers 23, that are pivoted to the member 15 of theback 13. Beyond their pivotal point with the member 15 said fingers are pivoted to a rod 24, that is pivoted to a leg or support 25, that is pivoted to the member 15 near the upper end thereof. The pivotal connections between said parts are so arranged with relation to the shape and size of the same that when the back 13 is in an upright position said legs or supports lie close to the back of the lounge, but when the said member 15 is thrown to a horizontal position, Fig. 3, the said arm 21 is brought down by reason of its pivotal connection with said back and base, while the legs 25 are thrown out at right angles to the member 15 and serve as supports for the outer end thereof. The lever 22 extends below its pivotal point with the base and is provided with a bent end portion or arm 26, having a forked end. hen the back is extended, the said lever 22 is turned until the forked end of the arm 26 thereon engages a pin 27 on the side of the seat, that is also extended, and thereby serves to support the said seat in an obvious manner. 28 and 29, that are hinged together, so that, as shown in Fig. 4, the said member 29 can be thrown out, whereby the meeting faces of said members will be in horizontal alignment, and thus provide a table or rest at each side of the lounge or bed, as the case may be.

When the device is made up as a bed,it is retained in such position by reason of the contact of the levers 22 with pins 30 on the ends of seat, so that when it is desired to make the bed the arms 21 are forced outwardly until they can pass to the rear of the said pins 30, as will be plainly obvious. The fringe or tapestry on the arms and base can obviously be arranged to cover all and any parts of the mechanism, so that the outward appearance presented by the lounge in no manner indicates the presence of any mechanism or the capability of the lounge being changed to a bed.

I claim as my invention- 1. Alounge comprisingabase,aseat hinged at one edge to one side of said base, a back hinged at its lower edge to the opposite side of said base, arms pivoted to said back, and levers pivoted to the sides of said base and pivotally connected at one end with said arms and having their other ends free, the said free ends of said levers being located to engage said seat when said back and seat are extended.

2. A lounge oomprisinga base, a seat hinged at one end to one side of said base, a back hinged at its lower edge to the opposite side of said base, arms pivoted to said back, and levers pivoted to the sides of said base and pivotally connected at one end with said arms, the free ends of said levers being forked and located to engage pins on said seat when said back and seat are extended.

3. Alounge comprisingabase, a seat hinged at one edge to one side of said base, a back hinged at its lower edge to the opposite side of said base, legs or supports pivoted to the rear side of said back, arms pivoted to said back and said legs or supports, and levers pivoted to the sides of said base and pivotally connected with said arms, the connection between said legs or supports and levers being arranged practically as described, so thatwhen the back and seat are extended said legs or supports will sustain said back and the ends of said levers will engage said seat.

4. A lounge com prisinga base, a seat hinged at one edge to one side of said base, a back hinged at its lower edge to the opposite side of said base, legs or supports pivoted to the rear side of said back, arms pivoted to the said back, rods pivoted to said arms and to said legs or supports, and levers pivoted to the sides of said base and pivotallyconnected at one end to said arms, said parts being arranged practically as described, so that when the back and seat are extended said legs or supports will sustain said back and the free ends of said levers will engage said seat.

5. Alounge com prisinga base, aseat hinged at one edge to one side of said base, a back hinged at its lower edge to the opposite side of said base, arms pivoted to said back, 1evers pivoted to said arms and to said base, and projections 30 on said base located to engage the rear edges of said levers when the back stands in an upright position.
