In what are termed central-fire cartridges, in which the fulminate is not placed in the flange, this-objection will notoccur, and in such the timing or plating may be done after the flange is formed.
It is obvious that other methods of applyingthe coating or plating to the case may be used;;and that gold, silver, and othermetals or alloy of metals may be used instead oftin, 7
but tin is-preferable,lbr the obvious reason that it is one of the 'most eflicient, -'.cheap'est, andeasiest applied of an for the purpose intended. It is alsoobvious that in using some kind of metals, such as gold, silver, &c., .for the coating material, it may be successfully and rapidly applied-by thewell-known galvanicf process. I I am aware improvement by boiling brasscases in a solution of tin in acid, butthe coatingthusiapplied.v was a mere film, and entirely ineflicient .for the accomplishment of the des red object;

It is obvious'that the cases may be coated onplated internally'cnlyor both internally and externally, as circumstances may require; and wherethe'cartridges are intended to be -,kept for any great length of time, and where they'aretobe used-in moist or 'warm climates,
and externally.
